Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to express my sincere appreciation to the hotel management for helping us to make the meeting a great successful.

Firstly, the participants said that they liked the hotel premises, and the service you provided. Personally, as an event coordinator, it was a proud moment for me. Also, they mentioned about the advanced facilities in your hotel which is marvelous.

However, they were unsatisfied about the food. Most of the participants were allergic to milk products and it has already informed to the hotel staff a week before the event. Unfortunately, it has not given much importance and resulted in 2 people hospitalized by having the food. It was an avoidable situation. But it is totally fine, because our teammates are really satisfied with your service. Next time make sure you will not repeat it.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The letter covers all three bullet points: the positive aspects of the hotel, the issue with the food, and suggestions for improvement. However, the response is under the 150-word minimum, which limits the development of ideas. The tone is inconsistent; while it begins professionally, the phrase 'it is totally fine' regarding the hospitalization of guests is inappropriate for a formal complaint letter. The ideas are relevant, but the development is somewhat brief due to the length constraint.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is organized into logical paragraphs, and the progression of ideas is generally clear. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'Firstly', 'Also', and 'However', which help guide the reader. However, the transition between the serious issue of hospitalization and the concluding remark is abrupt and lacks the necessary formal cohesion expected in a business letter. Paragraphing is present, but the overall structure feels slightly disjointed due to the brevity of the content.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, with some attempts at more specific language like 'premises', 'coordinator', and 'marvelous'. However, there are errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'make the meeting a great successful' (should be 'a great success') and 'it has already informed' (should be 'it had already been communicated'). The range is sufficient to convey the message, but it lacks the precision and flexibility required for higher bands.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, particularly with passive voice and verb tense consistency, such as 'it has not given much importance' instead of 'it was not given'. The sentence '2 people hospitalized by having the food' is grammatically weak and lacks a main verb. While the meaning is generally clear, these frequent errors in basic grammar and sentence construction prevent a higher score.
