Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing to formally share my feedback about the services of ITC hotel, Jaipur. My company, OpsTree had an all-day meeting at the hotel on August 14, 2026.
To begin with, all the employees liked the ambience and the amenities. For instance, the pool was very clean and everyone enjoyed the pool side drinks. Additionally, the live music to close the evening was a soothing experience.
On the other hand, we were unhappy about the food that serverd for lunch. Firstly, the food was bland and there were limited vegetarian options on the menu. This was unacceptable and ruined the mood of the team, especially when we requested a vegetarian and vegan menu. Hence, I would rate your hotel a 3/5 star.
In the light of the above, I would request you to initiate a refund of 30% on our total billed amount for not addressing our preferences which we specified at the time of booking. I expect a response from you within 7 days. Please contact me at my phone for further clarification.
Best Regards,
Sachin Jain

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly identified the positive aspects of the hotel, explained the issues regarding the food, and provided a constructive suggestion for improvement. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter of complaint, and the purpose is clear from the outset. The inclusion of specific details, such as the date of the meeting and the specific nature of the dietary failure, helps to develop your ideas well. You have maintained a consistent position throughout the letter, and the request for a refund is a logical conclusion to the complaint.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The letter is well-organized with a clear logical progression. You have used appropriate paragraphing to separate the different stages of your complaint. Cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'Additionally', 'On the other hand', and 'In the light of the above' are used effectively to guide the reader through your argument. The flow of ideas is smooth, and each paragraph serves a distinct purpose. The referencing is clear, and the overall structure is professional and easy to follow, meeting the requirements for a high band score in this criterion.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message with precision. Phrases like 'formally share my feedback', 'ambience and the amenities', and 'unacceptable' are used correctly. There are a few minor slips, such as 'serverd' (a spelling error) and 'at my phone' (which should be 'on my phone'). However, these errors do not impede communication. You have successfully used topic-specific vocabulary related to hospitality and business meetings, which adds to the professional tone of the letter.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. Most of your sentences are error-free, and your control of punctuation is generally good. There are a few minor grammatical inaccuracies, such as 'food that serverd' (passive voice error) and 'at my phone' (preposition error). Despite these occasional slips, the meaning is always clear, and the grammatical control is strong enough to support the professional tone of the letter. The use of modal verbs in your request for a refund is appropriate and well-handled.
