Dear Sir or Madam,

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir

Hope you are doing well. This letter is in reference to the Strategy day oragnised at you hotel for the senior leaders if our organisation. T

he event was organised well as there were signages at the entrance for guidance for all staff attending. The meeting room was quiet, clean and equipped with all necessary devices and stationery items. The complementary wi-fi was also working fine with good speed and the servers at the venue were helpful and polite. All staff members were impressed with the hospitality of hotel staff.

The one thing that ruined the entire experience of all leaders was the food quality and non adherence to time schedules shared for the food servings. The late servings impacted the overall agenda of the meeting and therefore leaders had to rush to complete the agenda for the day. Moreover, the food served in the morning as brunch and supper were not upto the mark in terms of quality. As part of packaged deal, hotel was to serve them choice of beverages in tea or coffee along with cookies and sandwiches when only cookies were served. Above all, the lunch buffet was supposed to be part of package deal when limited items were served on order basis that ruined the exprience of three course meal. All the leaders were disappointed with miscommitment at hotel's end in terms of food served.

This was the first time we expereinced such a service and hotel staff explained the reason of this miss was that they didn't have sufficient footfall at the hotel to arrange for a buffet. We strongly recommend to avoid such misses in future during corporate events else this may result in discontinuation of relationship with the hotel in the absence of required hospitality. Hoping to hear your view point on this.

Regards

Harleen

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly outlined the positive aspects of the hotel, such as the signage and the meeting room facilities. You also provided a detailed explanation regarding the dissatisfaction with the food, specifically mentioning the timing issues and the discrepancy between the promised buffet and the actual service. The suggestions for improvement are relevant and well-integrated. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter of complaint, maintaining a professional stance throughout. The ideas are well-developed and the purpose of the letter is clear from the beginning to the end, fulfilling all requirements of the task effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which helps the reader follow your argument easily. You use a range of cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'Above all', and 'Therefore' to link your points. However, there are some minor issues with paragraphing and flow, such as the fragmented sentence at the start ('T'). Additionally, some transitions feel slightly repetitive. Despite these minor mechanical issues, the overall structure is coherent and the information is presented in a logical sequence that supports the purpose of the letter.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary suitable for a formal complaint, using terms like 'hospitality', 'discontinuation', and 'miscommitment'. There are some spelling errors, such as 'oragnised', 'exprience', and 'expereinced', which slightly detract from the professional quality of the writing. While you successfully convey your message with precision, the occasional spelling slips and slightly awkward phrasing (e.g., 'miscommitment at hotel's end') prevent the vocabulary from reaching the highest band. Nevertheless, the range is sufficient to express your ideas clearly and with appropriate tone.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'Strategy day oragnised at you hotel' (should be 'your'), 'if our organisation' (should be 'of'), and 'hotel was to serve them choice of beverages' (missing articles). Additionally, there are some punctuation errors, such as the stray 'T' at the end of the first paragraph. While these errors are noticeable, they do not impede communication, and the meaning remains clear throughout the letter. A more careful proofreading would help eliminate these minor slips.
