Student answer (Band 7.5)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing to provide some feedback about the all-day meeting that I organised for my company, "Westjet" in your hotel last Sunday.
Overall, all participants were extremely delighted with the hotel's ambiance and the welcoming nature of your staff. They liked the spacious room with comfortable chairs and flowers on the table, which added some freshness to the room. They mentioned the excellent customer service provided by your staff.
Despite much positive feedback, they were disappointed with the lunch that was provided during the meeting. Several participants found that the food was cold and lacked freshness. There were few vegetarian options and some were served with a small portion. The lunch was an important part of our meeting which negatively impacted our meeting with clients.
I would further suggest that you review the quality of food and ensure that the food is served with right temperature to the guests. It would be appreciated if you could introduce more vegetarian options and increase their quantities.
Thank you will consider the comments. I hope you will find the suggestions useful for future events.
Yours faithfully,
Navjot

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The response successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly identified the positive aspects of the hotel, explained the specific issues regarding the food (temperature, freshness, and portion sizes), and provided constructive suggestions for improvement. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter of complaint. The ideas are well-developed and the purpose of the letter is clear from the outset. To reach a higher band, you could provide slightly more detail on how the poor lunch specifically affected the meeting, although your mention of the impact on clients is a good start.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs for each point, and a formal closing. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the different topics. Cohesive devices such as 'Despite much positive feedback' and 'I would further suggest' are used appropriately to guide the reader through the text. The progression of ideas is smooth and easy to follow. The letter maintains a consistent formal tone throughout, which is essential for this task type.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary suitable for a formal complaint, such as 'ambiance', 'negatively impacted', and 'review the quality'. The language is precise enough to convey your message clearly. There are no significant errors in word choice. To improve further, you could incorporate more sophisticated collocations or idiomatic expressions appropriate for formal business correspondence, such as 'fell short of expectations' instead of 'were disappointed with'.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures with a high degree of accuracy. Most sentences are error-free, and the punctuation is generally correct. There is a minor error in the final paragraph: 'Thank you will consider the comments' should be 'I hope you will consider the comments' or 'Thank you for considering the comments'. Aside from this, the control over grammar is strong, and the minor slip does not impede communication.
