Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

Good day to you. My company had an all-day meeting at the Iris hotel last week and I am writing to give the participant's feedback.

Firstly, I want to appreciate the hotel's staff. They showed amazing dedication and politeness. The customer care service and attention to little details was amazing. The participants also praised the hotel's decorations and the breath-taking water-front view.

Although, we were not pleased with the food that was served. The steak and rice we had, appeared to be under cooked. Under cooked steak can be unsanitary and unappealing. Also, the meals took a very long time to get ready and the result was unflattering.

I will suggest hiring a professional chef who can manage time effectively and deliver an exceptional result. Another suggestion will be to ensure meals are prepared slightly before the reservation time.

Thank you very much for your time. I hope to visit the hotel soon and appreciate the changes.

Yours faithfully,

Osahon Abigail

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly identified the positive aspects of the hotel, explained the issues with the lunch service, and provided constructive suggestions for improvement. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a manager. To reach a higher band, ensure that your ideas are slightly more developed; for instance, you could have elaborated on how the undercooked food specifically impacted the meeting schedule or the participants' morale. However, the task requirements are fully met, and the purpose of the letter is clear throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is well-organized with a clear logical progression. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which makes the information easy to follow. You used basic cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Although', and 'Also' to link your ideas. While these are effective, the flow could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words or more sophisticated transitions between sentences. The paragraphing is appropriate for a formal letter, and the overall structure supports the development of your argument effectively.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. Phrases like 'amazing dedication', 'breath-taking water-front view', and 'unflattering' show a good attempt at using descriptive language. There are some minor issues with word choice, such as 'give the participant's feedback' (which should be 'provide feedback') and 'get ready' (which is slightly informal for this context). However, these errors do not impede communication. To improve, try to incorporate more precise collocations and avoid slightly repetitive phrasing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most of your sentences are grammatically accurate, and your punctuation is generally correct. There are a few minor errors, such as 'under cooked' (which should be hyphenated as 'under-cooked' or written as one word) and the unnecessary comma after 'Although' in the third paragraph. Despite these small slips, your control of grammar is good, and the meaning is never obscured. You have demonstrated enough variety to show a solid command of English sentence construction.
