Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Manager,
I hope you are doing well. I am writing this letter to express my disappointment about your food which was served for lunch in my last visit. I had reserved a meeting room in your hotel for me and my colleauges to discuss and get prepared for our upcoming event.
Although my officemates liked your hotel abiance as well as peacefull environment to get focused on their work, the food you served for lunch was very unsatisfied. The first reason behind their unhappyness is that they wanted to try different maxican and italian cuisines which were unavailable at that moment, but you mentioned on your website that you have a vary type of cuisines available at your location. After this dissatisfaction, we ordered 'Indian style curry' and 'Chapati' for our lunch but the taste was not so good as we expected. The curry was very sweet which we expected to be a bit spicy.
I would suggest that you have to focuse on your food. Unless the ambiance, the food is second important thing for getting high rating and good reviews on web. And for this you may hire experienced chefs.
Yours Faithfully

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
You have addressed all three bullet points of the task: mentioning the positive aspects of the hotel, explaining the dissatisfaction with the food, and providing suggestions for improvement. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the explanation regarding the unavailability of Mexican and Italian cuisine is a bit confusing, as it is unclear if you expected these specific items to be on a standard lunch menu. To reach a higher band, ensure that your reasons are clearly articulated and logically connected to the context of a business meeting.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The letter is organized into clear paragraphs, which helps the reader follow your argument. You use some basic cohesive devices like 'Although' and 'The first reason'. However, the flow between sentences is occasionally mechanical, and some transitions feel abrupt. For example, the jump from discussing the menu to the specific order of 'Indian style curry' could be smoother. Additionally, the final paragraph lacks a strong concluding sentence to tie the letter together. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring a more natural progression of ideas would enhance the overall coherence.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message, but there are several spelling and collocation errors that detract from the professional tone. Examples include 'abiance' (ambiance), 'peacefull' (peaceful), 'unhappyness' (unhappiness), and 'vary type' (wide variety). Furthermore, 'very unsatisfied' is an awkward collocation; 'highly dissatisfied' would be more natural. While your meaning is always clear, the frequent spelling mistakes and slightly unnatural word choices suggest a need for more careful proofreading and a wider range of precise, topic-specific vocabulary.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
You demonstrate an ability to use complex sentence structures, such as 'Although my officemates liked...'. However, there are consistent grammatical errors throughout the text. Issues include article usage ('the food you served', 'the ambiance'), subject-verb agreement, and awkward phrasing like 'Unless the ambiance, the food is second important thing'. The sentence structure is often repetitive, and some phrasing is non-standard. While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your point, they occur frequently enough to impact the overall fluency and accuracy of the writing.
