IELTS Writing Task 1 question

You recently organised an all-day meeting for your company, which took place in a local hotel. In their feedback, participants at the meeting said that they liked the hotel, but they were unhappy about the food that was served for lunch.

Write a letter to the manager of the hotel. In your letter

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Dear Sir or Madam,

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I hope this letter finds you well. I am writing this letter to give you honest feedback about the services that my team and I received from your hotel last Saturday.

Although most of the participants said the hotel was very clean and the staff was welcoming, the food that was served was not good. Not only was the food not fresh, but it was also very spicy. Moreover, they ordered food at 12 p.m.; however, they received it at 1 p.m. That was a long wait.

I would like to give some suggestions: the hotel has a very good environment, but your restaurant staff is not helpful. Please keep an eye on them and try to get feedback from every customer after the meal. Therefore, you can see whether your clients are satisfied with your service or not. It may help you to increase the productivity of the hotel.

I hope you will like this advice.

Yours faithfully,

Harjinder Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The letter covers all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly state what was liked (cleanliness and staff), explain the issues with the food (lack of freshness, spiciness, and long wait times), and provide suggestions for improvement. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter of complaint. To reach a higher band, you could expand slightly on the impact of these issues on your meeting, which would help to further develop your ideas and demonstrate a more sophisticated approach to the task requirements.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs addressing specific points, and a formal closing. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Although', 'Moreover', and 'Therefore' to link your ideas. While the flow is generally good, the transition between the complaint about the food and the suggestions could be smoother. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow throughout the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You use a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. Phrases like 'honest feedback', 'welcoming', and 'increase the productivity' are used correctly. However, the vocabulary is somewhat functional and lacks variety. To improve, try to incorporate more precise adjectives or collocations related to hospitality, such as 'unsatisfactory', 'prompt service', or 'culinary standards'. The current range is adequate for the task but does not demonstrate the flexibility required for higher bands.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a good control of basic sentence structures and use some complex sentences, such as 'Although most of the participants said...'. There are very few grammatical errors, and your punctuation is generally accurate. The sentence 'Therefore, you can see whether your clients are satisfied...' is grammatically sound, though 'Therefore' is slightly misused in this context; 'This way' or 'By doing so' would be more natural. Overall, the writing is clear and error-free enough to maintain a high level of communication.
