Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Sir,
I hope you are doing well. I am writing to express my dissatisfaction with the food that we had on Tuesday afternoon.
As you may aware, I organised a whole day meeting for my staff in your hotel on Tuesday.
The conference hall had all the facilities including speakers, mike and a LED screen. The restaurant was clean and the staff members were kind and friendly. I would like to appreciate the sitting arrangements too.
Although, we were satisfied with all the services,we were not happy with the lunch. First of all, It took more than an hour to serve the food. The Biriyani was so spicy that we were not able to eat.We felt absence of salt in the paneer based starter. In addition to this, the daal was not fresh.
To solve this issues, please try to arrange a meeting with your staff and try to understand about the issues they were facing. Give a proper hands on training to the cooks so that it won’t happen again.
Thank you for your time and assistance.
Yours sincerely,
Kruti Patel

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
You have addressed all three bullet points of the prompt effectively. You clearly identified the positive aspects of the hotel, provided specific reasons for the dissatisfaction regarding the lunch, and offered actionable suggestions for improvement. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter of complaint. The ideas are well-developed and relevant to the context of the task. To reach a higher band, ensure that the opening and closing salutations are consistent; you began with 'Dear Sir or Madam' as instructed, but signed off with 'Dear Sir', which is a minor inconsistency. Overall, the task requirements are fully met.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the task, which helps the reader follow your argument. You have used some cohesive devices such as 'First of all', 'In addition to this', and 'Although', which help to link your sentences. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and there are minor issues with punctuation, such as missing spaces after commas (e.g., 'Although, we were satisfied with all the services,we were not'). Improving the flow between sentences and ensuring consistent punctuation would enhance the coherence of your writing.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. You used appropriate terms like 'dissatisfaction', 'facilities', and 'arrangements'. There are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'felt absence of salt' (should be 'noticed a lack of salt') and 'hands on training' (should be 'hands-on training'). While the vocabulary is adequate for the task, incorporating more precise or sophisticated collocations would demonstrate a wider range. For example, instead of 'unhappy about the food', you could use 'disappointed with the quality of the catering'.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While your meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'As you may aware' (should be 'As you may be aware') and 'To solve this issues' (should be 'To solve these issues'). Additionally, there are some punctuation errors, specifically missing spaces after commas. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and consistent punctuation will help improve your accuracy.
