Student answer (Band 7.5)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing to provide my feedback for an all-day meeting that my company hosted at your hotel 'Taj Skyline' last week. The participants were very positive about the venue being spacious however, they expressed their disappointment about the food that was served for lunch.
All the participants were impressed with the clear signage that helped them navigate into different rooms. They even mentioned that the conference room was well lit and spacious as well as the staff members were cooperative and courteous.
Although, the venue was perfect, all the attendees were dissatisfied with food not being served freshly. There were limited options available and the dietary requirements were not met. Many people felt that the food was prepared long ago before it was served, so instead of being hot it was lukewarm. Furthermore, vegetarian and non- vegetarian food was served on the same counter and labelling was not done properly.
I would like to suggest you to make some improvements, like labelling the dishes that are being served on the counter as well as serving veg and non-veg food on separate counters. Moreover, make sure that the food is prepared sometime before serving it so that it stays fresh and warm.
I hope you will take my feedback positively and consider making improvements in future.
Yours faithfully,
Alex White

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
The response fully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly identified the positive aspects of the hotel, such as the spaciousness and signage, and provided specific, logical reasons for the dissatisfaction regarding the food, including temperature and cross-contamination issues. Your suggestions for improvement are practical and directly address the problems mentioned. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter of complaint, and the purpose is clear throughout. You have successfully covered all requirements of the task in a well-developed manner.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the task, which aids readability. You use a range of cohesive devices such as 'furthermore', 'although', and 'moreover' to link ideas effectively. The progression of information is smooth, moving from the positive feedback to the specific complaints and finally to constructive suggestions. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct topics, and the overall structure is coherent and easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary suitable for a formal complaint. Phrases like 'expressed their disappointment', 'dietary requirements', and 'cooperative and courteous' show a good level of control. While the vocabulary is generally accurate, there are minor opportunities to use more sophisticated collocations to elevate the tone further. For instance, instead of 'prepared long ago', you could use 'prepared well in advance'. The language used is precise enough to convey your meaning clearly without any ambiguity.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. You show good control over grammar, though there are a few minor slips. For example, 'I would like to suggest you to make' is slightly awkward; 'I would like to suggest that you make' would be more natural. Additionally, there is a minor punctuation error in the third paragraph: 'Although, the venue was perfect' should not have a comma after 'Although'. Despite these occasional errors, the majority of your sentences are error-free and do not impede communication.
