Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir,

I am writing this letter to appreciate your management on the day of the meeting of my company at your hotel and the feedback I got from my collegues.

Everybody at the place praised the sitting arrangement because space was maintained and nobody felt congested while sitting. Additionally, stage decoration caught everybody's eyes due to its very suttle yet fancy design which was perfect for the formal meeting set up. My manager liked the staff coordination and politeness.

There is only one area of improvement from our side is the food which was served cold. Employees the event were disappointed during the lunch. However, there were various food items which was amazing. But for the future, you should train your staff to make sure everything served on the table is hot and fresh which increase your number customers and the ratings of your hotel as well.

I hope you will take my point in consideration and it will be improved next time we book.

Yours sincerely,

Sam

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The letter covers all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly identify what was liked (seating and decor), explain the issue with the food (served cold), and provide a constructive suggestion for improvement. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a manager. However, the development of ideas is somewhat brief. For instance, while you mention the food was cold, adding a specific detail about how this impacted the flow of the meeting would have strengthened the response. Overall, the task is fully addressed, and the purpose of the letter is clear throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Additionally' and 'However' to link ideas. However, the transition between the positive feedback and the complaint is a bit abrupt. The paragraphing is generally appropriate, though the second paragraph is quite dense. To reach a higher band, ensure that each paragraph focuses on a single clear theme and use a wider variety of linking words to improve the flow between sentences, as some connections currently feel slightly mechanical.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'congested', 'coordination', and 'suttle' (though this is a spelling error for 'subtle'). There are some minor errors in word choice and spelling, such as 'collegues' (colleagues) and 'suttle'. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your message clearly, it lacks the precision and sophistication required for higher bands. Attempting to use more varied collocations, such as 'impeccable service' or 'culinary standards', would enhance the professional tone of your writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical slips, such as 'There is only one area of improvement... is the food' (which should be 'is the food'), 'Employees the event' (missing a preposition like 'at'), and 'which increase' (should be 'which would increase'). While these errors are noticeable, they do not impede the reader's understanding of your message. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and ensuring that relative clauses are correctly integrated into your sentences.
