IELTS Writing Task 1 question
You recently organised an all-day meeting for your company, which took place in a local hotel. In their feedback, participants at the meeting said that they liked the hotel, but they were unhappy about the food that was served for lunch.
Write a letter to the manager of the hotel. In your letter
- say what the participants liked about the hotel
- explain why they were unhappy about the food
- suggest what the manager should do to improve the food in future
You do NOT need to write any addresses.
Begin your letter as follows:
Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Sir,
I hope you are doing well in your life. It's my pleasure to inform you that the meeting which was held in your hotel last week was fabulous. Our company really like your hotel.
My team members were praising about the ambience of your hotel and hospitality by your staff. My designing team were found of your interior designer after seeing your hotel. On the other hand, the colleagues are little bit unhappy about the food which was served in lunch. The reason behind that most of the food was non-vegetarian and very few cuisines are vegetarian. In this month sawan days are doing on due to which most of the people can't eat non-vegetarian food.
As a well wisher, I would like to suggest you that kindly make the proper balance between vegetarian and non-vegetarian food so that people who can't eat non-vegetarian food won't remain hungry.
I hope you will work on the gaps and wishing you all the very best for future.
Thank you
Tamanna

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
You have addressed all three bullet points required by the prompt. You successfully identified the positive aspects (ambience and staff), explained the issue with the food (lack of vegetarian options), and provided a constructive suggestion for improvement. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter, although the opening and closing could be more professional. The ideas are relevant and clearly communicated, though the explanation regarding 'sawan days' is slightly culturally specific and could have been explained more broadly as a dietary requirement to ensure the reader fully understands the context of the request.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The letter is logically organised into clear paragraphs, each serving a specific purpose. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'On the other hand' and 'As a well wisher', to transition between ideas. However, the flow between sentences is sometimes slightly mechanical. For example, the transition between the praise for the hotel and the complaint about the food could be smoother. The use of paragraphing is appropriate for a formal letter, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow throughout the text.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'ambience', 'hospitality', and 'cuisines'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation. For instance, 'My designing team were found of your interior designer' is incorrect; 'fond of' would be the correct phrase. Additionally, 'sawan days are doing on' is not natural English. While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more precise control over idiomatic expressions and common collocations to reach a higher band score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'Our company really like' (should be 'likes'), 'My team members were praising about' (should be 'praising the'), and 'most of the food was non-vegetarian' (should be 'was non-vegetarian'). The phrase 'won't remain hungry' is slightly awkward in this context. While these errors are noticeable, they do not prevent the reader from understanding your message. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of prepositions.
