Dear Sir or Madam,

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir,

I am writing this letter to you to give my feedback for your hotel for the all-day meeting, which I organized a week ago.

The ambience of the hotel was praised by all the attendees and the design and infrastructure caught their attention as well. The sitting arrangements for the meeting felt very comfortable to them and it was perfect to spend the day and display the presentations. The reviews about the hotel staff depict that they were very professional, polite and helpful.

However the feedback for lunch was a bit disappointing as the attendees found the steak served was cooked more than it was expected to be and it was very spicy too. Moreover the portion size was not adequate enough . Beside that the presentation was very eye-catching but practically, it was unsatisfactory.

So, I expect you to take proper care of the cooking methods, so that no one has to be unhappy with the taste. The orders need to be prepared by keeping an eye on the spice level and the portion size must be evaluated carefully and should be rethought about. These small details will help to have a big impact on the overall feedback for the hotel.

I look forward to hearing from you and thank you for your consideration to this concern.

Regards,

HK.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly identified what was liked (ambience, staff, infrastructure), explained the issues with the lunch (overcooked steak, spice levels, portion size), and provided constructive suggestions for improvement. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a manager. The ideas are well-developed and relevant to the task requirements. To reach a higher band, ensure that the suggestions are slightly more specific or persuasive to demonstrate a more sophisticated approach to the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs addressing specific points, and a formal conclusion. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate different topics. You use some cohesive devices such as 'However', 'Moreover', and 'Beside that' to link ideas. While the flow is generally good, some transitions feel slightly mechanical. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring smoother transitions between sentences would enhance the overall coherence. Overall, the progression of ideas is clear and easy to follow throughout the letter.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. Phrases like 'infrastructure', 'professional', and 'unsatisfactory' are used appropriately. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in collocation and word choice, such as 'cooked more than it was expected to be' (better: 'overcooked') and 'rethought about' (better: 'reconsidered'). While the vocabulary is adequate for the task, incorporating more precise, less common lexical items would help elevate the score. The current range is functional but lacks the flexibility and sophistication required for higher bands.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most sentences are clear, and the meaning is never obscured by errors. There are some minor grammatical slips, such as 'I am writing this letter to you to give my feedback for your hotel' (better: 'regarding your hotel') and 'the steak served was cooked more' (better: 'the steak served was overcooked'). Punctuation is generally accurate, though there is a missing comma after 'However' in the third paragraph. The majority of your sentences are error-free, showing good control over basic and intermediate structures.
