Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir or Madam

I am writing to you regarding the all-day meeting that I organized for my company on the 4th of September at your hotel in Texas. Immediately after the meeting, we met the following week at work and I received some positive and negative feedbacks about the hotel which I would like to inform you about for future improvements.

Firstly, the participants were were very pleased with the overall appearance of the hotel especially the outdoor area designed with beautiful flowers and rope lights. Our initial plan was to make use of the hall indoor but the ambience outside and the attractive views led to a change of decision. I would commend the management effort on the overall hotel appearance including the colors, artworks, amenities, reception as well as the swimming pool area which is very neat. This represent discipline, beauty, and professionalism.

However, we were a little bit disappointed about the chefs cooking skills. At first, the foods were served very late and it was a little bit salty which led to refusal by several members at the meeting. I had to order for drinks and snacks towards the end of the meeting because people were complaining bitterly.

In my own opinion, I think you should invest in intensive chef training and also teach them importance of time management so this issue will not keep occurring in future for potential clients. Thank you so much and I look forward to possible improvements.

Yours faithfully,

Abdulraheem Abeeb

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly described the positive aspects of the hotel, explained the issues with the food, and provided a constructive suggestion for improvement. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter of complaint. The ideas are well-developed and relevant to the context of the meeting. To reach a higher band, ensure that the opening paragraph is more concise and that the transition between the positive feedback and the complaint is slightly smoother. Overall, the task requirements are fully met.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized with clear paragraphing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the task, which helps the reader follow your argument easily. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'However', and 'In my own opinion' to link your ideas. However, some transitions could be more sophisticated. For instance, the connection between the meeting date and the feedback could be tightened. The use of referencing is generally clear, and the overall progression of the letter is logical and easy to follow throughout.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. Phrases like 'ambience', 'professionalism', and 'intensive chef training' are used effectively. There are some minor errors, such as using 'feedbacks' (which is an uncountable noun) and 'chefs cooking skills' (missing an apostrophe). While the vocabulary is adequate for the task, incorporating a few more precise collocations or less common lexical items would elevate the response. The errors present do not impede communication, but they do highlight a need for more attention to word form and pluralization.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While many sentences are accurate, there are several grammatical slips, such as 'the participants were were' (repetition), 'the foods were served' (food is usually uncountable), and 'teach them importance' (missing an article). Punctuation is generally functional, though some sentences would benefit from better comma placement. Despite these errors, the meaning remains clear throughout the letter. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles with uncountable nouns.
