Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing this letter for sharing the experience of an all-day meeting which took place at your hotel. Based on the feedback of the participants at the meeting in the hotel, the comments were that they like the infrastructure of the hotel, the luxurious design of the hotel. The atmosphere in the hotel was very delightful and the meeting went smoothly in the room provide by the hotel.

Although some of the feedback mentioned that the food which was served for lunch was not suitable and the people in the meeting were not very happy with the provided food. The lunch was good looking but when tasted, it was not in its best taste. Some individuals said the food was cold, while others said it smells different in a bad way. I created an atmosphere of discomfort for sometime in meeting.

I would like to recommend some advice which can be helpful in future for your hotel. Please provide heated meals for all people and make sure that only fresh food is being prepared in the kitchen.

Yours sincerely,

Arshdeep Singh

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have addressed all three bullet points required by the task. You successfully mentioned the positive aspects of the hotel, explained the issues with the lunch, and provided suggestions for improvement. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter. However, the development of your ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the explanation of why the food was unsatisfactory could be more detailed to better convey the severity of the situation to the manager. Additionally, the closing suggestion is quite brief. To improve, try to expand on your points by providing more specific context or professional recommendations, which would help in achieving a higher band score for task development.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each focusing on a specific aspect of the prompt. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Although' and 'I would like to', which help the flow of the text. However, the progression between sentences could be smoother. Some transitions feel a bit mechanical, and the use of referencing could be more varied. For example, in the second paragraph, the repetition of 'the hotel' and 'the meeting' makes the writing feel slightly repetitive. Using pronouns or synonyms more effectively would improve the overall cohesion of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for this task, using words like 'infrastructure', 'luxurious', and 'discomfort'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation. For example, 'it smells different in a bad way' is not a natural expression; 'it had an unpleasant odor' would be more precise. Similarly, 'I created an atmosphere of discomfort' is likely a misuse of the verb 'create' in this context, as you were the organizer, not the cause of the discomfort. Expanding your range of collocations and ensuring words are used in their correct context will help you reach a higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is good. However, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text. For instance, 'I am writing this letter for sharing' should be 'I am writing this letter to share'. There are also issues with article usage and verb tense consistency, such as 'the room provide by the hotel' instead of 'the room provided by the hotel'. While these errors do not significantly impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and correct preposition usage will improve your accuracy.
