Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am contacting you regarding the meeting take place in your hotel on 30 August. I want to express the feelings of the participants that come in the meeting.
First of all, they liked the hotel environment and the service provided to us during our meeting. Many participants praised the meeting room facilities, comfortable seating, the helpfulness of audio and video visuals and the technical support team throughout the meeting.
However, there is one problem that my participants and I face is food. The food service for lunch is not impressive, as the hot buffet arrived later than expected and was lukewarm. Secondly, there was no vegetarian option for the vegetarian participants; because of that, some did not eat anything for lunch.
I would like you to change or improve your catering service for the future. So that in future there will be a vegetarian option in food and service, the hot instead of lukewarm or cold.
Best regards

| Criterion | Band |
|---|---|

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
You have addressed all three bullet points of the task effectively. You clearly identified the positive aspects of the hotel, explained the issues with the lunch service (late arrival and lack of vegetarian options), and provided a suggestion for improvement. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter of complaint. To reach a higher band, ensure that your suggestions for improvement are slightly more detailed; for example, you could suggest specific catering protocols or a review of the menu planning process to ensure dietary requirements are met. Overall, the purpose of the letter is clear and the response is well-focused on the requirements.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter follows a logical structure with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'First of all', 'However', and 'Secondly' to guide the reader through your points. While the progression of ideas is clear, the transition between the final suggestion and the closing could be smoother. Some sentences are slightly disjointed, such as the final sentence which lacks grammatical cohesion. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that each paragraph has a clear topic sentence would help elevate the coherence of your writing.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. You use relevant terms like 'meeting room facilities', 'catering service', and 'vegetarian option'. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'audio and video visuals' (which is redundant) and 'the hot instead of lukewarm' (which is grammatically incomplete). To improve, try to use more precise collocations and avoid repetitive phrasing. Expanding your vocabulary to include more formal expressions for complaints would also be beneficial for a task of this nature.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors that occasionally distract the reader, such as 'meeting take place' (should be 'meeting that took place'), 'participants that come' (should be 'participants who came'), and 'the hot instead of lukewarm' (which lacks a verb). While these errors do not impede overall communication, they indicate a need for more careful proofreading, particularly regarding verb tenses and article usage. Increasing the variety of complex structures while maintaining accuracy will help you achieve a higher score in this criterion.
