Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir,

I am writing this letter to express my the visit at your hotel. I organised a meeting for my company at your hotel on 1 September. It’s a quite excellent experience at your hotel as all the participants from the meeting really like the interior, housekeeping and one additional the pool of the hotel. But there was a one dissatisfaction with the food. As we order the food it’s not well in taste and too much spicy. Moreover, the food is also lukewarm and tasteless and they take more time to serve the food and money was not worth for it. I want to provide some suggestion to you that you have to check kitchen staff implementation stricter temperature controls for buffet stations. Also, ensure an adequate quantity of food based on the pre-confirmed headcount is essential for future bookings.

I hope you will take this constructive feedback into consideration. I look forward to hearing from you regarding how you plan to address these matters.

Yours faithfully,

Supreet

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You have addressed all three bullet points required by the prompt: mentioning the positive aspects of the hotel, explaining the issues with the lunch, and providing suggestions for improvement. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the explanation of why the food was unsatisfactory is a bit repetitive (using 'lukewarm', 'tasteless', and 'too much spicy' in quick succession). To reach a higher band, you should expand slightly more on the impact of these issues on your meeting participants to show a more sophisticated level of communication.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is organized into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow your points. You use some cohesive devices like 'Moreover' and 'Also' to link ideas. However, the flow is occasionally interrupted by awkward phrasing, such as 'I am writing this letter to express my the visit at your hotel.' The transition between the positive feedback and the complaints is a bit abrupt. Improving the use of linking phrases and ensuring that each paragraph has a clear topic sentence would help improve the overall cohesion of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message, such as 'constructive feedback' and 'pre-confirmed headcount'. However, there are several instances of imprecise word choice and minor errors, such as 'one additional the pool' and 'money was not worth for it'. These errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your meaning, but they do indicate a need for more precise control over collocations and word forms. Expanding your vocabulary to include more formal business-related expressions would be beneficial.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors throughout the text, such as 'I am writing this letter to express my the visit' (unnecessary article), 'It’s a quite excellent experience' (tense inconsistency), and 'As we order the food it’s not well' (incorrect verb tense). While these errors are noticeable, they do not impede communication. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and consistent tense usage, especially when describing past events like the meeting that took place on September 1st.
