Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing to inform about our recent experience at your hotel for our company meeting held last week. Firstly, I would like to appreciate the cleanliness and environment that your hotel is maintaining. As me and my team got experienced a very diligent response from your management.
Furthermore, I would like to raise a point about your food which makes our entire team disappointed. For example, the food that we had for our lunch isn't cooked properly and was cold at the time being served. This made the whole team very frustrated. Because of this some of them got vomiting sensation, dizziness and need to go to the hospital. Also, some of them took a leave the next day. Finally, I would like to suggest to improve the taste and quality of your food which makes the customers happy.
I look forward to hearing from you.
Yours Sincerely,
Vineeth

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The letter covers all three bullet points required by the prompt. You successfully identified the positive aspects of the hotel, explained the issues with the food, and provided a suggestion for improvement. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. The description of the food issues is quite dramatic, and the suggestion for improvement is rather generic. To achieve a higher band, you should provide more specific details about the food (e.g., what was served) and offer more concrete, professional suggestions, such as hiring a new catering supervisor or conducting a food safety audit, rather than simply asking for 'better taste'.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The letter follows a logical structure with a clear opening and closing. You use basic cohesive devices like 'Firstly', 'Furthermore', and 'Finally' to sequence your points. However, the paragraphing is slightly disjointed; the second paragraph is quite long and contains several distinct ideas that could be better separated. Additionally, some transitions are mechanical, and the flow between sentences could be smoother. For example, the jump from the food being cold to the team needing to go to the hospital is quite abrupt. Using more varied linking phrases would improve the overall coherence of the letter.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
Your vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing you to communicate your message clearly. You use some appropriate phrases like 'diligent response' and 'raise a point'. However, there are some awkward collocations and word choices, such as 'appreciate the cleanliness' (which sounds slightly unnatural in this context) and 'vomiting sensation'. The range of vocabulary is somewhat limited, relying on fairly simple descriptors. To improve, try to incorporate more precise adjectives and professional business terminology to better suit the formal tone of a complaint letter.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally distract the reader. For instance, 'As me and my team got experienced' is grammatically incorrect; it should be 'As my team and I experienced'. There are also issues with verb tense consistency, such as 'need to go to the hospital' (should be 'needed') and 'some of them took a leave' (should be 'took leave'). While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focus on subject-verb agreement and consistent tense usage.
