Student answer (Band 4.0)

Dear Sir,

I am writing this letter to inform you that I want to work as a volunteer at the museum.

I saw your advertisement on the radio last night about part-time voluntary work at the museum. As I finished with my exams last week now I am free for two months so I want to join your team. I am living in the next street. I have an interest in history so this is very good opportunity for me to enhance my knowledge.

I have six months experience in customer service. So it will be easy for me to deal with the visitors. I have good communication skills as well as I know three different languages which help me a lot to do a good job.

I am available for morning and evening shifts. You can give me any of them.

I am looking forward to hearing from you soon.

Yours faithfully

Jashanpreet Kaur.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 1.0

The response is completely off-topic. The task required a letter to a hotel manager regarding a company meeting, specifically addressing the hotel's facilities and the poor quality of the lunch. Instead, the student wrote a letter applying for a volunteer position at a museum. As the response fails to address any of the bullet points or the core purpose of the prompt, it cannot be assessed for task completion in the context of the set instructions. This results in a very low score for Task Achievement as the content is entirely irrelevant to the task provided.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The letter is organised into short, distinct paragraphs, which is appropriate for the format of a letter. There is a basic attempt at logical progression, moving from the purpose of the letter to personal background and then availability. However, the use of cohesive devices is quite mechanical, such as the repetitive use of 'I' at the start of sentences. While the structure is clear, the lack of relevance to the prompt makes the overall coherence of the intended task impossible to evaluate effectively.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary is functional but limited. The student uses basic phrases like 'I am writing this letter to inform you' and 'I have an interest in history'. There is little attempt to use more sophisticated or topic-specific vocabulary. While the language is sufficient to convey the student's meaning in their chosen (albeit incorrect) topic, it lacks the range and precision required for higher bands. There are no significant spelling errors, but the lexical range is narrow and repetitive.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The student demonstrates a mix of simple and some complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'As I finished with my exams last week now I am free', which lacks correct punctuation and flow. Another error is 'I have six months experience', which should be 'six months' experience'. While the meaning is generally clear, the control over complex structures is inconsistent, and there are frequent minor errors in sentence construction and punctuation that prevent the writing from reaching a higher band.
