Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Manager,
I am writing to share my company's participants experience at your hotel. Recently, I organized an all-day meeting for my company which took place in your hotel and as a result all the participants were very happy as they liked the hotel. They all were pleased with the warm- welcoming and were surprised after seeing the arrangement as everything was managed and arranged so nicely.
On the other hand, they were little disappointed with the food. However, the food served was cold and also was not served on the time. As it was lunch time but the food served was more of the breakfast kind. Additionally the appetizers went out of stock really quick which added more disappointment.
I would appreciate if you look into the matter and try to improve the food in the future. I would suggest you to prepare the menu more carefully and also keep an account for the ingredients all the time.
yours sincerely
Anchal

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
You have addressed all three bullet points required by the task. You clearly stated what the participants liked (the hotel and the arrangements), explained the issues with the food (temperature, timing, and menu suitability), and provided suggestions for improvement. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter of complaint. To reach a higher band, ensure that your explanations are slightly more detailed; for instance, you could have elaborated on how the 'breakfast-style' food specifically impacted the professional nature of the meeting. Overall, the response is well-focused and meets the requirements of the prompt effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each serving a specific purpose. You use some cohesive devices such as 'On the other hand', 'Additionally', and 'However' to link your ideas. While the flow is generally good, some transitions feel slightly mechanical. To improve, try to vary your linking words and ensure that the progression between sentences is smoother. For example, the transition between the positive feedback and the complaint could be softened to sound more natural. Paragraphing is used correctly, which helps the reader follow your argument easily.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'disappointed', 'appetizers', and 'ingredients'. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'warm-welcoming' (should be 'warm welcome') and 'on the time' (should be 'on time'). The vocabulary is functional but lacks the precision and sophistication required for higher bands. To improve, focus on using more natural collocations and avoiding repetitive phrasing. Expanding your range of descriptive adjectives would also help convey your points more effectively.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While your meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'participants experience' (should be 'participants' experience'), 'they were little disappointed' (should be 'a little disappointed'), and 'the food served was more of the breakfast kind' (which is slightly awkward phrasing). Punctuation is generally acceptable, though there are some missing commas. To achieve a higher score, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles. Increasing the variety of complex sentence structures while maintaining accuracy will also help your score.
