Dear Sir or Madam,

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir,

This is Brain, Head of HR from Revenue Lite, we had recently organinsed, an all day meeting at your hotel. We choosed your hotel, because of the great reviews.

I would like to tell you, that the feedbacks we have received from our colleagues was not good at all. The sevice was very bad and especially, the lightening in the hall was not good. Despite of complaining about it, your staff took a lot of time to address our issues.

Moreover, the food quality was very poor. Many of the fish items were not even properply cooked. Whereas, the drinks were not served cold. Other dishes don't had a good taste at all. I was very surprised, as this meeing was so important and receiving such reviews was not good.

I would like to suggest that, kindly take a proper look at your staff kitchen and give proper instructions regarding food, make sure the food is properly cooked and served fresh to such meetings. Always do a background check whenever there is a meeting in your hall that all the lightening is working properly.

Looking forward to see some improvements next time.

Yours Sincerly,

Brain.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all three bullet points of the task. You successfully identified what was liked (the hotel reviews), explained the issues with the food (undercooked fish, poor temperature), and suggested improvements. However, the task achievement is slightly hampered by a misunderstanding of the prompt. You included complaints about the 'service' and 'lightening' (lighting), which were not requested and distracted from the core focus on the food. To improve, ensure you stick strictly to the specific points requested in the prompt to ensure your ideas are fully developed and relevant.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is organised into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow your argument. You use some cohesive devices like 'Moreover' and 'However' to link ideas. However, the flow is occasionally interrupted by awkward phrasing and some mechanical transitions. For example, the opening paragraph is a bit disjointed. To reach a higher band, focus on using a wider variety of linking words and ensure that each paragraph has a clear, singular focus. The referencing is generally clear, but the overall progression could be smoother with more sophisticated signposting.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

Your vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, but it lacks the precision and range required for higher bands. There are several spelling errors, such as 'organinsed', 'sevice', 'lightening' (instead of lighting), 'meeing', and 'Sincerly'. Additionally, some word choices are basic or slightly unnatural, such as 'don't had a good taste'. To improve, focus on learning the correct spelling of common business terms and try to incorporate more precise adjectives to describe the food and service, rather than relying on 'good' or 'bad'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede the flow. Common issues include verb tense errors ('We choosed', 'don't had'), incorrect preposition usage ('Despite of'), and subject-verb agreement issues. Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with unnecessary commas. While the meaning is generally clear, the frequency of these errors prevents a higher score. Focus on mastering basic verb conjugations and proofreading for common punctuation errors to improve your accuracy.
