Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I would look like to bring your attention to a matter our team confronted while attending an all-day meeting at your hotel.
Last week our company's meeting was a success at your hotel. I particularly appreciate the warm and welcoming atmosphere of the hotel. The decorations requested met our expectations. All participants appreciated the commendable efforts put into organizing such a huge meeting.
Although every arrangement made was quite congenial, the meeting attenders' complained about the food served for lunch. The dissatisfaction was particularly the pasta being served stale the whole time. Some of my colleagues tried to get the attention of the supervisor towards this issue but no adequate measures were taken.
I would like to recommend that the hotel management must ensure the freshness levels of food. Regular inspections must be taken into account regarding the usage of healthy and up-to-date food. Above measures can definitely improve the quality of the food being served thereby, meeting the customer's needs.
Thankyou for paying attention to this matter.
Yours Sincerely,
Shravan Kumar

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The letter successfully covers all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly state what was liked (atmosphere and decorations), explain the issue with the food (stale pasta and lack of staff response), and provide actionable suggestions for improvement. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter of complaint. To reach a higher band, ensure that your ideas are slightly more developed; for instance, you could have elaborated on how the stale food specifically impacted the meeting's productivity. However, the response is fully relevant and addresses the task requirements effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs for each point, and a formal closing. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different aspects of the complaint. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Although', 'However', and 'Therefore' to link ideas. At times, the flow is slightly mechanical, and some transitions could be smoother. For example, the transition between the positive feedback and the complaint could be more sophisticated. Overall, the message is easy to follow, and the progression of ideas is logical throughout the text.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. Phrases like 'commendable efforts', 'congenial', and 'adequate measures' show an attempt to use more sophisticated language. There are some minor collocation errors, such as 'look like to bring your attention' (should be 'would like to draw your attention') and 'meeting attenders' (a bit unnatural; 'attendees' is better). Despite these minor inaccuracies, the vocabulary is precise enough to communicate your points without difficulty, and the tone remains professional throughout the letter.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical slips. For example, 'I would look like to' is incorrect, and 'the meeting attenders' complained' contains an unnecessary apostrophe. Additionally, 'Above measures can definitely improve' is slightly awkward; 'The above measures' would be more accurate. You show good control over sentence structure, but the frequency of these minor errors prevents a higher score. Focusing on proofreading for subject-verb agreement and article usage would help improve your accuracy.
