Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir,

I hope you are doing well. I am writing this letter to give you a feedback for the event organized by my company in your hotel two weeks ago.

Everyone was very pleasant with the behaviour of the hotel staff and also, place was good for the official meeting. The meeting hall was quite spacious and air-conditioned as well as sitting arrangements were admirable. Apart from this, every equipment like projector, laptop and audio speaker were easy to use for everyone. Overall, everyone was happy with the hotel organization.

But, there was one thing that you need to improve and that is your food quality and service. The food was extremely cold and there was not labels on the food containers to differentiate the vegetarian, non veg dishes. That was looking unprofessional. Also, the food was not re-filled after once it served. So, you should tell your staff which kind of what temperature food should be served. Also, staff members should be on ground and fulfill the needed things. Also, always place the labels on food containers to avoid the unnecessary problems.

I would be really happy to arrange the upcoming event in your hotel after and I hope you would take my feedback into consideration.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly identified the positive aspects of the hotel, explained the issues with the food, and provided actionable suggestions for improvement. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a manager. The ideas are well-developed and relevant to the task requirements. To reach a higher band, ensure that the transition between the positive feedback and the complaints is slightly more fluid, and ensure that the suggestions for improvement are presented with a slightly more professional tone, avoiding repetitive sentence structures.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each serving a specific purpose. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Apart from this' and 'Overall', which help the flow of information. However, the use of cohesive devices is occasionally mechanical, and some sentences feel slightly disjointed, particularly in the third paragraph where you use 'Also' at the start of three consecutive sentences. Improving the variety of linking words and using more sophisticated referencing would enhance the overall cohesion of the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, such as 'spacious', 'admirable', and 'unprofessional'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'give you a feedback' (should be 'give you feedback'), 'every equipment' (equipment is uncountable), and 'not labels' (should be 'no labels'). While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more precise control over word forms and articles to reach a higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. There are several grammatical errors, including subject-verb agreement issues like 'there was not labels' and 'every equipment... were'. Additionally, there are minor punctuation and article errors throughout the text. While these errors are noticeable, they rarely impede the reader's understanding. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of uncountable nouns like 'equipment' and 'feedback'.
