Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir,

I hope you are doing well. I am writing this letter to thank you for helping our company to organize an event successfully. I would also like to provide a little feedback about our experience at your hotel.

First of all, I really want to appreciate your staff's politeness and fast service, all of our team members were very happy with your team's service. Also, the decoration was more beautiful than we were expecting.

However, there was an issue that I would like to bring to your attention as most of our clients were vegetarian but a few were non-vegetarian as a result we ordered both types of food but the food items were not properly labeled and we had a difficulty recognizing whether they are vegetarian or non-vegetarian.

I kindly want to request you to take care of this thing in the future in order to either respect the preferences of individuals in term of food type or to avoid any allergy related problems.

Apart from that, I would like to thank you with all my heart to support us in organizing our meeting.

Kind regards,

Komal

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly identified the positive aspects (staff politeness and decoration), explained the issue regarding the lack of food labeling for dietary requirements, and provided a constructive suggestion for future improvements. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a manager. To reach a higher band, ensure that your suggestions are slightly more detailed; for example, you could have suggested specific solutions like 'clear signage' or 'a printed menu card' to make your feedback more actionable for the manager.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is well-organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Ideas are logically sequenced, moving from the positive feedback to the specific complaint and then to the suggestion. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'First of all', 'Also', and 'However' effectively to guide the reader. To improve, try to vary your linking phrases further and ensure that the transition between the complaint and the suggestion is smoother. The paragraphing is appropriate for a formal letter, and the overall progression of ideas is easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. Phrases like 'bring to your attention' and 'respect the preferences of individuals' are well-chosen and appropriate for the formal context. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'take care of this thing' which is slightly informal and vague. Using more precise terminology like 'address this issue' or 'implement a labeling system' would elevate the quality of your writing. Overall, the vocabulary is adequate for the task and does not impede communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are some grammatical slips, such as 'I kindly want to request you to take care of this thing' (which is slightly awkward phrasing) and 'in term of' (should be 'in terms of'). Additionally, there are some minor punctuation and run-on sentence issues, such as the long sentence in the third paragraph. Increasing your use of complex structures with more precise control over prepositions and articles would help you achieve a higher band score.
