Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 7.5)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing to provide feedback on the arrangements for the all-day meeting our company recently held at your hotel.
Overall, the participants were very impressed with the hotel. They particularly appreciated the comfortable meeting room, the professional and attentive staff, and the pleasant surroundings. The facilities were well maintained, and the meeting was conducted smoothly without any major issues.
However, the lunch was a significant disappointment. Several participants felt that the food was rather bland and lacked variety. In addition, the vegetarian options were extremely limited, while some dishes were served cold. As lunch was an important part of the day, this affected the overall experience.
I would suggest offering a wider selection of fresh dishes, including more vegetarian choices, and ensuring that all food is served at an appropriate temperature. It may also be helpful to collect guests’ dietary preferences in advance.
I hope you will take these comments into consideration and improve the dining experience for future events.
Yours faithfully,
Aanchal

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The response fully addresses all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly identified the positive aspects of the hotel, such as the meeting room and staff, and provided specific reasons for the dissatisfaction regarding the lunch, including the lack of variety and temperature issues. Furthermore, your suggestions for improvement are practical and directly address the problems mentioned. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter of complaint, and the purpose of the communication is clear from the outset. All parts of the task are well-developed, demonstrating a strong understanding of the requirements for a General Training Task 1 letter.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which helps the reader follow your argument easily. You have used a range of cohesive devices effectively, such as 'Overall', 'In addition', and 'Furthermore' (implied by the structure), which link your sentences and paragraphs smoothly. The opening and closing salutations are appropriate for the formal context. The paragraphing is logical and contributes to the overall clarity of the message, making the text easy to read and understand.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You have used a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message with precision. Phrases like 'particularly appreciated', 'significant disappointment', and 'take these comments into consideration' demonstrate a good command of formal language suitable for this task. The vocabulary is natural and fits the context well. While the range is not exceptionally wide or sophisticated, it is accurate and precise throughout the letter. There are no spelling errors, and the word choices are consistently appropriate for a professional complaint letter, meeting the requirements for a high band score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5
The grammar is highly accurate, with a variety of complex sentence structures used correctly. You successfully employed passive voice ('was served', 'was conducted') and complex noun phrases to maintain a formal tone. The majority of your sentences are error-free, and the punctuation is used correctly throughout. There is a good balance between simple and complex sentences, which keeps the flow of the letter natural and professional. The control over tense and agreement is consistent, and there are no grammatical slips that impede communication or distract the reader.
