Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

my name is Karam Sidhu and I organized a meeting last week in your hotel. I am writing this email reagrding a feedback and compaint about the food that was served in this meeting.

In your hotel , all staff members were doing their best job and they wore very neat and clean dresses. All participants liked the meeting room area and speacially the arrangements such as , comfortable chairs , tables and water bottles for everyone.

However , they did not like the taste of the food which was very spicy and unorganized according to them.Additionally , some food items were not well structured and very unhygine.

Therefore, next time when i will arrange other meetings , please instruct your chiefs to make good quality dishes and use fresh ingridents to make it . Otherwise , everyone was satisfied with your service.

Thanks and Regards,

Karam Sidhu

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The candidate has successfully covered all bullet points of the task. The letter opens with an explanation of who is writing and the purpose of the email. It clearly outlines what the participants liked about the hotel, noting that 'all participants liked the meeting room area and speacially the arrangements such as, comfortable chairs, tables and water bottles'. Furthermore, the response explains why they were unhappy about the food, pointing out that it 'was very spicy and unorganized' and 'very unhygine'. Finally, a suggestion is offered for improvement, requesting the manager to 'instruct your chiefs to make good quality dishes and use fresh ingridents'. All parts of the prompt are addressed adequately, placing this comfortably in Band 6.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter maintains a coherent overall arrangement with a clear formal opening and closing. Basic cohesive devices are used to link ideas, such as 'However' and 'Additionally'. However, paragraphing is somewhat weak; the body of the letter is compressed into dense blocks rather than separated logically into distinct points like the room feedback, food critique, and suggestions. Referencing is mostly clear, though some punctuation anomalies around commas (e.g., placing spaces before commas) disrupt the smooth flow of the text. Overall progression is present, but cohesion is occasionally mechanical, leading to a Band 6 score.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, with appropriate general terms like 'participants', 'arrangements', and 'service'. However, there are notable spelling errors, such as 'reagrding' instead of regarding, 'speacially' instead of specially, 'unhygine' instead of unhygienic, 'chiefs' instead of chefs, and 'ingridents' instead of ingredients. These errors demonstrate some limitation in lexical control. The candidate attempts some less common vocabulary such as 'unorganized' and 'satisfied', but spelling and word choice inaccuracies prevent the lexical score from reaching Band 6.0, as the spelling errors cause minor distractions.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as 'I am writing this email reagrding a feedback and compaint about the food that was served in this meeting.' There are several grammatical errors and awkward phrasings, including 'a feedback' (feedback is uncountable), 'wore very neat and clean dresses' (attire or uniforms would be more suitable), and 'when i will arrange' (unnecessary future tense in a time clause). Punctuation is also flawed, with inconsistent spacing before commas and periods. Despite these errors, communication is not severely impeded, and the meaning remains clear throughout, aligning well with the Band 5.5 descriptor.
