Dear Sir or Madam,

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir,

i hope this letter finds you doing well.I am writing to bring to your attention that we organised a meeting for our company at your hotel on the 15th September and we had food arranged for the people from the hotel itself. Everyone was appreciating the aesthetics of the place. It felt like a very royal and demure place to host a meeting.

But they all were very dissatisfied with the taste of the food. The chicken served was pretty cold. Also, the pasta had no salt and flavour. We had very high expectations from the main course but it was dissapointing too because the portion size was not appropriate.

I think the chef might would not be well trained because i have been here with my family and last time the food was delicious so you could either train your chef accordingly or can hire a new one since its a negative review for the hotel.I hope you will look into the matter.

Yours Faithfully,

Drishti

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response successfully covers all bullet points required by the task. You stated what participants liked about the hotel, noting that everyone appreciated the aesthetics and felt it was a royal place for a meeting. You clearly explained why they were unhappy, mentioning the cold chicken, lack of salt and flavor in the pasta, and inappropriate portion sizes. Furthermore, you suggested what the manager should do to improve in the future, proposing either retraining the chef or hiring a new one. The register is appropriately semi-formal, although the opening salutation contains a minor formatting slip ('Dear Sir' instead of the requested 'Dear Sir or Madam'). All parts are well addressed, earning a solid Band 7.0 for Task Achievement.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is generally coherent and easy to follow. Each bullet point is addressed in a logical sequence, progressing naturally from the positive aspects to the negative feedback on the food, and finally to your suggestions for the manager. Paragraphing is used to separate these ideas, although paragraph breaks are slightly unconventional (for instance, starting a new paragraph for just the opening sentence or combining sentences awkwardly). Cohesive devices are used, such as 'Also' and 'since', though some referencing could be smoother. Overall, the organization is clear and logical, supporting a Band 6.5 descriptor well, though slightly hindered by mechanical paragraphing and punctuation spacing.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate and sometimes effective range of vocabulary for the task. Words like 'aesthetics', 'dissatisfied', and 'expectations' show a good attempt at less common items. However, there are some word choice and collocation inaccuracies, such as 'food arranged for the people from the hotel itself' which sounds a bit unnatural, and the unusual application of 'demure' to describe a corporate meeting venue. Additionally, there is a spelling error ('dissapointing'). Despite these occasional flaws, communication is never impeded, and the vocabulary is sufficient for a Band 6.0 rating.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

Your writing displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as the conditional-style suggestion 'so you could either train your chef accordingly or can hire a new one'. You demonstrate control over past tenses ('we organised', 'was appreciating'). However, there are several grammatical errors and punctuation issues throughout the text, including missing spaces after commas (e.g., 'well.I am', 'Also, the'), a lowercase 'i' for the pronoun, and an awkward modal construction ('might would not be'). These errors do not impede communication, placing your grammar firmly at the Band 6.0 level.
