Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir or madam,
I am writing this letter to provide feedback about our recent visit to your hotel. Even though all the members liked the hotel, but there were some concerns about the lunch that was served to us.
Everyone of the visitors were impressed immensly by the hotel aesthetics, especially the conference hall, where we had our meeting. The seating was confortable and the lighting was perfect. Furthermore, the view from the windows were so amazing to look at.
Despite having these good moments, the lunch was a bit unconfortable for everyone. The food was not cooked properly. It was either salty or burned. It was quite evident that the chef had not put much efforts while preparing the food. This ruined everybody's excitement for the lunch.
I would highly recommend that your chef in charge will taste the food before serving to the customer. This way they could indentify any mistake, before it reaches the customer. You can also utilize more staff for his help if you are facing higher demand of customers.
I hope you will consider my suggestions.
Yours faithfuly,
Shubham

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The candidate has successfully addressed all three bullet points of the task instructions. The letter begins with the required salutation and clearly explains what participants liked about the hotel, noting features like the conference hall aesthetics, comfortable seating, and window views. The writer then explains why they were unhappy with the lunch, detailing specific issues such as improper cooking, excessive saltiness, and burned food. Finally, the response offers practical suggestions for improvement, recommending that the chef taste the food prior to service and hire extra kitchen staff. The tone is appropriate for a formal complaint letter. The requirements of the task have been fully met, earning a strong band score.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organised with a clear paragraph progression. Each paragraph focuses on a distinct aspect of the prompt: introduction, positive feedback about the hotel, negative feedback about the lunch, suggestions for the future, and a polite sign-off. Cohesive devices are used reasonably well, such as 'Even though', 'Furthermore', and 'Despite having these good moments', though referencing is occasionally slightly clumsy as seen in 'that your chef in charge will taste the food before serving to the customer. This way they could indentify...'. Paragraphing is used appropriately throughout the letter. Overall, the text flows well and presents a coherent message from start to finish.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The candidate demonstrates a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey both praise and criticism effectively. Words and phrases like 'aesthetics', 'conference hall', 'ruined everybody's excitement', and 'higher demand of customers' show a good attempt at varied expression. However, there are some minor lexical inaccuracies and spelling errors, such as 'immensly' (immensely), 'confortable' (comfortable), 'view... were' (subject-verb agreement/word choice), and 'efforts' used as a countable noun ('put much efforts'). Despite these occasional lapses, the vocabulary is adequate to communicate the ideas clearly without impeding the reader's understanding.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, including subordinate clauses introduced by 'Even though', 'where', and 'Despite having these good moments'. However, there are several grammatical errors scattered throughout the text. These include a double conjunction error ('Even though... but'), a plural agreement error ('view... were'), spelling mistakes ('immensly', 'confortable', 'indentify'), and an awkward modal construction ('recommend that your chef in charge will taste' instead of 'taste' or 'should taste'). While these errors are noticeable and detract from precision, the meaning remains clear throughout, placing this writing firmly at Band 6.
