Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

The purpose of my writing today is to give feedback about our recent visit to your hotel.

Last week, I organised an all-day meeting for my company for around 20 employees. Everyone was happy with your conference room because it was clean, spacious, and comfortable for that many people. Additionally, all the staff members were friendly and supportive. The hotel had a quiet and pleasant environment.

However, the participants were not happy with the lunch. They found very little variety for vegetarian meals, and the food they got was a bit cold. Second, some said the food was too salty. Moreover, there were not many options, so everyone could not find something they liked.

I would recommend that you provide fresh and hot food in the future. Also, give a variety of vegetarian and healthy choices for your meals. It will be a good idea if you could ask the organizer for their food preferences before an event.

Thank you so much for your consideration. I hope my suggestion could help you in the future to do better.

Yours faithfully,

Kevin Gohil

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The candidate has successfully addressed all three bullet points of the task prompt in a clear and appropriate manner. The letter begins by identifying the positive aspects of the hotel, specifically mentioning the conference room being clean, spacious, and comfortable, along with the friendly staff and quiet environment. The second bullet point is well covered by detailing the specific complaints about the lunch, such as the lack of vegetarian variety, cold food, and excessive saltiness. Finally, the candidate provides actionable suggestions for future improvement, including serving fresh, hot food and consulting organisers about dietary preferences beforehand. The tone is polite and professional, perfectly suited for a formal complaint letter. The ideas are fully extended and supported, demonstrating a solid understanding of the general training letter format. Therefore, this response fully earns a band score of 7.0 for Task Achievement.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter exhibits a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Each paragraph serves a distinct purpose, moving smoothly from the opening statement of purpose to the positive feedback, the complaints, the suggestions, and finally a polite closing. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate ideas. Cohesive devices are employed appropriately, such as 'Additionally', 'However', 'Second', and 'Moreover', which help to guide the reader through the text without confusion. While some transitions are straightforward, the overall referencing and cohesion are clear and well managed, satisfying the requirements for a band 7.0 in Coherence and Cohesion.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

The candidate demonstrates an adequate and sufficient range of vocabulary for the task. Words and phrases such as 'all-day meeting', 'conference room', 'supportive', 'pleasant environment', and 'dietary preferences' (implied) show a good control of general and work-related topics. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, and meaning is communicated clearly throughout. While the lexical range is not overly sophisticated, it is precise enough to convey the intended message effectively without causing any strain for the reader. Minor limitations in range place this comfortably at a band 6.5.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0

The response features a good mix of simple and complex sentence forms. The candidate successfully employs relative clauses and subordinate structures, such as 'Everyone was happy with your conference room because it was clean, spacious, and comfortable' and 'I would recommend that you provide fresh and hot food in the future.' Grammar and punctuation are generally well controlled, with frequent error-free sentences. Although there is a minor awkwardness in phrasing like 'so everyone could not find something they liked', the errors do not impede communication at all. The control of grammar warrants a band 7.0.
