Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing this letter to inform you about the dissatisfication with the food during our all-day meeting at your hotel.
To begin with, majority of our participants who attended a meeting appreciated the hotel architecture and ambience. Specifically, most of them were impressed by the defuse lighting and with air-conditioning.
However, there were major discomfort in the food. Firstly, the food was not warm and did not taste good either. Secondly, there were not many vegetarian options despite the fact that we already informed hotel prior to our event. Lastly, servers did not take care of proper heigenes and lot of them were serving without having hand gloves.
To sum up, I would like you to do a proper investigation on this incident to find out major root causes of this issue. Further, I would request you to discuss with the host rgarding menu if you have any concerns.
Thank you,
Jay Patel

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
You successfully covered all parts of the letter prompt. You addressed what the participants liked about the hotel by mentioning the architecture, ambience, lighting, and air-conditioning. You clearly explained why they were unhappy about the food, noting that it was cold, lacked taste, had insufficient vegetarian options, and lacked proper hygiene among the servers. Finally, you provided appropriate suggestions for the manager, asking them to investigate the incident and discuss the menu with the host. Your tone is polite and professional throughout, fully appropriate for a formal complaint letter. The requirements of the task have been met effectively, and your ideas are logically developed and supported.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
Your letter has a clear overall progression and logical structure. You followed a standard formal letter format, beginning with an appropriate salutation ('Dear Sir or Madam,') and closing with your name. You used paragraphing effectively to separate the introduction, the positive aspects, the complaints, and your recommendations. Cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'However', 'Firstly', 'Secondly', 'Lastly', and 'To sum up' are employed to guide the reader through your arguments. However, some referencing could be smoother, and minor cohesive links are slightly formulaic. Overall, the organisation of your ideas is clear and easy to follow throughout the response.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You demonstrated an adequate range of vocabulary for this task, successfully attempting less common items and specific terminology such as 'architecture', 'ambience', 'investigation', and 'vegetarian options'. However, there are a few noticeable lexical inaccuracies and missing articles, such as 'dissatisfication' (dissatisfaction), 'majority of our participants' (the majority of our participants), 'defuse' (diffuse or dim), 'prior to our event' (prior to the event), and 'heigenes' (hygiene). There are also some collocation errors, such as 'major discomfort in the food'. Despite these slips, your vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, and communication is never impeded.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You utilized a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating relative clauses ('who attended a meeting') and concessive clauses ('despite the fact that we already informed hotel'). There are, however, several grammatical errors throughout the text. These include missing articles ('informed hotel' instead of 'informed the hotel'), spelling mistakes ('rgarding' instead of 'regarding'), and prepositions or pluralisation issues ('lot of them' instead of 'lots of them' or 'many of them'). While these errors are noticeable, they do not impede communication, and you maintain good control over basic structures while attempting more complex ones.
