Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir,

I hope you are doing well. I am writing this letter to inform you about the recent all- day meeting which our company had at "Blue Mountain Hotel".

The meeting went really well, new protocols which we recently added in our business guidelines were followed by everyone. The participants praised the hotel infrastructure and cleanliness. Also, the hotel staff was really helpful in assisting each of us throughout the meeting.

However, there was one downside which i would like to discuss. Food was the only thing that made participants unhappy. I was going through the feedback and most of them mentioned that food was undercooked. Some of them also mentioned that it was way too oily.

Overall, the meeting's objective was achieved albeit some cons were there yet it went quite well. For future arrangements, I would like you to discuss with the hotel staff not to compromise on food quality. Also, we should get food samples before booking any hotel to make sure their food taste well.

kind regards,

kakxy

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The response successfully covers all parts of the prompt in a semi-formal tone suited to a business letter. You begin by stating what the participants liked about the hotel, noting their praise for the 'infrastructure and cleanliness' as well as the helpful staff. You then clearly explain why they were unhappy about the food, pointing out feedback regarding undercooked and overly oily dishes. Finally, you suggest what the manager should do to improve future catering, advising them to discuss food quality with the staff and to implement food sampling prior to future bookings. Your purpose is clear throughout and all bullet points are fully addressed, showing a good understanding of the task requirements.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.5

The letter is logically organised with a clear beginning, middle, and end, adhering to the requested opening 'Dear Sir or Madam' (though you wrote 'Dear Sir'). Paragraphing is used effectively to separate different ideas, such as the positive aspects of the hotel in the second paragraph and the negative feedback regarding food in the third paragraph. Cohesive devices are employed reasonably well, with transitional phrases like 'However' and 'Also' helping to connect your ideas, although referencing could be slightly smoother in places. Overall, the progression of information is easy to follow and meets the criteria for a well-structured letter.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You use a sufficient range of vocabulary to communicate your message clearly, incorporating some less common terms and business-appropriate phrases such as 'protocols', 'business guidelines', and 'objective'. There are a few minor lexical slips or awkward phrasing choices, such as 'food taste well' instead of 'food tastes good' or 'the food is of good quality', and a lowercase 'i' used for the pronoun 'I'. However, your vocabulary is adequate for the task and allows you to convey your points precisely without impeding the reader's understanding.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'The meeting went really well, new protocols which we recently added in our business guidelines were followed by everyone' (though this contains a comma splice). You demonstrate decent control over verb tenses when recounting past events ('went', 'was', 'were followed'). While there are some punctuation errors—such as missing capitalisation for 'day' in 'all- day', a lowercase 'i', and occasional comma splices—these errors do not impede communication, and the majority of your sentences are grammatically sound.
