Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing regarding the all-day meeting that i recently organised at your hotel,Although the participants were generally pleased with the hotel, they has some concerns about the lunch that was provided.

First of all, the participants particularly liked the hotel facilities and the meeting room. They found the room spacious, comfortable and suitable for the meeting. They also appreciated the helpful and professional staff, asa well as the clean and pleasent environment of the hotel.

however, they were disappointed with the food served for lunch. Several participants felt that the food was not fresh and was served at an unsuitable temperature. In addition to, there were very few vegetarian options, which caused difficulties for some members of our group.

I would suggust that the hotel use fresher ingredients and ensure that meals are served at the appropriate temperature. It would also be helpful to offer a wider variety of dishes, including vegetarian and other dietary options. I believe that changes would improve the experience for future guests.

I hope you will take this feedback into consideration. I look forward to hearing from you.

Yours faithfully,

Jaskaran Singh

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 8.0

The response covers all parts of the task well, providing a clear and well-developed account of the meeting, the positive aspects of the hotel, the issues with the lunch, and practical suggestions for improvement. The tone is consistently appropriate for a formal complaint letter. The writer clearly states what participants liked about the hotel, such as 'the hotel facilities and the meeting room', explains the food issues accurately regarding freshness, temperature, and dietary options, and offers clear recommendations. The ideas are extended and supported effectively throughout the letter, which shows a strong fulfillment of all bullet points in the prompt.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.5

The letter exhibits a clear logical organisation and progression from the opening statement through to the conclusion. Paragraphing is used effectively and appropriately, with each body paragraph focusing on a distinct aspect of the feedback: positive comments, negative lunch feedback, and suggestions for future improvements. Cohesive devices such as 'First of all', 'In addition to', and 'I would suggust' are used adequately to guide the reader through the text, although some minor mechanical linking tendencies prevent it from reaching a higher band. Overall progression is smooth and easy to follow.

Lexical Resource: Band 7.0

The writer demonstrates a sufficient range of vocabulary with some flexibility and precision, such as 'spacious, comfortable', 'professional staff', and 'dietary options'. There is an attempt to use less common items and appropriate formal style suitable for a complaint letter. However, occasional lexical errors and spelling mistakes occur, such as 'pleasent' instead of 'pleasant' and 'suggust' instead of 'suggest'. These minor inaccuracies in spelling and word choice do not impede communication, but they keep the lexical score at this level rather than allowing it to reach a broader, more polished range.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms effectively, demonstrating good control over basic structures and attempting more intricate patterns. There are frequent error-free sentences, such as 'Several participants felt that the food was not fresh and was served at an unsuitable temperature.' However, a few persistence errors in grammar, punctuation, and capitalization exist, such as lowercase 'i' and comma splices like 'hotel,Although', subject-verb agreement issues ('they has' instead of 'they had'), and minor prepositional or connective slips like 'In addition to,'. These errors rarely impede communication, reflecting a solid command of grammar with room for tighter mechanical control.
