Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing this letter to inform you that I recently hosted an event in your hotel, although your workers were welcoming, but the buffet we had was not so great.
We booked the hotel for a meeting last week saturday, 25th of August. When we arrived at the venue, the staff welcomed us warmly, and also assisted us with our luggages.
However, while eating my co-workers complained that the food had a stale tasted, presuming it was leftovers. They also noticed some item was on the menu was missing such as rice, plantain and beans.
Moving forward, I will like to advise you to prepare freshly made meals for your guest. Also, do a thorough check to make sure the food we paid for are provided sufficiently. If there are adjustment to the menu, please do well to inform us.
I hope this letter finds you well.
Yours faithfully,
Roland.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You successfully cover all three bullet points required in the task instructions. You mention the participants liked the hotel staff and their welcoming nature, explain why they were unhappy about the food such as the stale taste and missing items, and suggest improvements like preparing fresh meals and checking the menu. All parts of the prompt are addressed, which allows the response to meet the requirements of this band level. However, some ideas are slightly under-developed rather than fully extended. For instance, while you note that items like rice, plantain, and beans were missing, you could have expanded further on how this impacted the meeting participants or the overall event experience. To reach a higher band, ensure that every point is explored in greater depth with more elaboration and extension.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
Your letter has a coherent overall arrangement and follows a logical letter-writing format with an appropriate opening and sign-off. You use paragraphing sufficiently to separate different ideas, starting with the purpose of the letter, moving into the background details, addressing the food issues, and finally providing suggestions. However, cohesion is sometimes a bit mechanical or faulty. For example, the transition in the first sentence ('although your workers were welcoming, but the buffet...') creates a double-conjunction error that disrupts the flow. Additionally, referencing is occasionally slightly unclear. To achieve a higher score, you should ensure that cohesive devices are used more flexibly and smoothly to connect your ideas without causing any awkward pauses for the reader.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully communicating your message about the hotel event and food complaints. You attempt some less common vocabulary items, such as 'presuming', 'thorough check', and 'adjustment', which shows an effort to vary your language. However, there are noticeable lexical errors and awkward word choices that prevent you from reaching a higher band. For instance, you wrote 'luggages' (luggage is uncountable), 'stale tasted' (should be 'stale taste' or 'tasted stale'), and 'item was on the menu was missing' (grammar/word choice overlap). These errors and occasional spelling or collocation slips do not completely impede communication, but they highlight the need for greater precision and naturalness in your word choices.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms throughout your letter, demonstrating control over basic structures and attempting more intricate clauses, such as 'When we arrived at the venue, the staff welcomed us warmly...' There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, but they rarely impede communication. Examples include the run-on structure and conjunction clash in your opening sentence ('...welcoming, but the buffet...'), the preposition use in 'last week saturday', and subject-verb agreement issues such as 'some item was... was missing'. You also wrote 'I will like to advise', where 'would like' is more appropriate. To reach the next level, you need to produce a higher frequency of error-free sentences and demonstrate tighter control over complex grammatical patterns.
