Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
The response only partially addresses the task requirements and falls short of the minimum length requirement, containing 119 words instead of the required 150. While the letter attempts all parts of the prompt by mentioning what participants liked about the hotel, explaining the dissatisfaction with the food, and suggesting improvements, the ideas remain limited and under-developed. For example, the explanation regarding the food is restricted to brief statements that the dishes were served cold and there were few choices, lacking necessary elaboration. Furthermore, the tone and format show weaknesses, and the limited word count heavily restricts the development of the points.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
There is some basic organisation in the letter, but overall progression lacks clarity. The response is divided into brief paragraphs, yet referencing and logical flow between sentences are occasionally disrupted. Cohesive devices are used in a limited and somewhat repetitive manner, such as 'While', 'On a positive tour' (misused), and 'However'. Paragraphing is attempted to separate the positive aspects from the complaints, but the structure remains basic and lacks the clear logical progression expected at higher bands. The opening salutation and transition into the body paragraphs also reflect mechanical organisation.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is limited but minimally adequate for the task, with noticeable errors in spelling, word choice, and collocation that occasionally cause difficulty for the reader. Instances of inadequate lexical control include spelling mistakes like 'orgenized' instead of organised, 'invironment' instead of environment, 'cofertable' instead of comfortable, and 'Kindely' instead of kindly. Inappropriate word choices also appear, such as writing 'all experience' instead of 'overall experience' and 'On a positive tour' instead of 'On a positive note', demonstrating restricted control over less common lexical items.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The writer demonstrates a limited range of grammatical structures, relying primarily on simple sentences alongside faulty attempts at complex ones. Frequent errors are present throughout the text, including punctuation and capitalization mistakes like 'Dear sir' and 'i', as well as errors in agreement and tense consistency, such as 'our both compliments', 'participants complaint', and 'there are very few choices' (when referring to a past event). Additionally, clauses are sometimes incorrectly linked, as seen in 'While our all experience was good, but I would like...', which creates structural confusion.
