Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Manager,

I am writing this letter to complain about the quality of food served during my firms meeting.

I am Dev Desai from the Accenture, few days ago on Sunday, October 4, my company had organized an all day workshop Innovative life in your ball room banquet hall. Furthermore, the participants turned out in huge numbers and it was a grand success. Additionally, most of them acknowledged that the staff hospitality was extremely good from start till the end. Nevertheless, a lot of them were not happy about the lunch, the quality of food served that day was poor and unhygienic. Moreover, the soup was cold and even the sweet rasgulla had some sort of weird taste.

Lastly, I would like to request you to check the quality of the food before it is served to the guest so that you could avoid such discrepancy in the future.

Please give your kind attention to this matter.

Yours sincerely,

Dev Desai

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You successfully cover all parts of the task prompt, addressing what participants liked about the hotel, explaining why they were unhappy with the lunch, and suggesting what the manager should do to improve the food in future. For instance, you mention that participants found the staff hospitality to be extremely good, note that the soup was cold and the sweet dish had a weird taste, and recommend that the quality be checked before serving. However, some ideas are more fully developed than others; while the positive aspects and the specific complaints are mentioned clearly, the suggestion for future improvement is somewhat brief. To move towards higher bands, you could extend your ideas further by elaborating more on how the quality control process should be implemented.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

Your letter presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear purpose established from the beginning. You use standard formatting for a semi-formal or formal letter, opening appropriately and closing with your name. Cohesive devices are employed to link your thoughts together, such as 'Furthermore', 'Additionally', 'Nevertheless', and 'Moreover'. However, some of these cohesive links feel a bit mechanical or are slightly overused in sequence, which affects the natural flow of the text. Furthermore, referencing is occasionally imprecise, such as the transition between sentences in the second paragraph. To achieve a higher band, ensure that cohesive devices are used more flexibly and subtly to create a smoother, more natural progression of ideas throughout the letter.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items and descriptive phrases such as 'grand success', 'staff hospitality', and 'discrepancy'. Your choice of words is generally sufficient to convey your meaning clearly to the reader. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice, collocation, and word form, such as writing 'my firms meeting' instead of 'my firm's meeting' or 'from the Accenture' instead of 'from Accenture'. There are also minor awkwardness issues in phrasing like 'had some sort of weird taste'. These lexical errors and slight inaccuracies do not impede communication, but they prevent the vocabulary score from rising. To improve, focus on mastering natural collocations and precise terminology.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating an ability to construct longer sentences with clauses introduced by conjunctions and transition words. There is good control over basic sentence structures, and your intent is always clear. Nevertheless, there are some errors in grammar and punctuation that appear throughout the text. These include missing apostrophes in possessives like 'firms meeting', unnecessary articles such as 'the Accenture', and run-on structures or comma splices in longer sentences like the second paragraph where multiple clauses are strung together. Fortunately, these grammatical slips rarely impede communication and remain at a level consistent with a mixed control of simple and complex forms. To reach a higher band, aim for greater accuracy in punctuation and article usage.
