Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear sir or madam,
I am writting to provide feedback on the lunch served during an all day meeting that I recentaly organised at your hotel.
First of all ,I would like to mention that the participants were very pleased with the hotel amenties. They appreciated the clean and comfortable meeting room ,the friendly staff, the peaceful atmosphere. The meeting arrangements were excellent, and everyone felt comfortable.
However, several participants were disappointed with the lunch provided .The food was cold and lacked variety .There were very few vegetarian options, and the some dishes did not fresh taste .As the meeting lasted the entire day ,the participants expected and a good quality and satisfying meal.Unfortunately ,the lunch did not meet their expectations.
I would therefore suggest that you improve your food service in the future. You could offer wider variety of dishes ,including vegetarian options. It would also be helpful to have more guests in the future.
I hope you will consider this feedback and make the necessary improvements .We would be happy to consider your hotel for future meetings.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
Your letter successfully addresses all parts of the task prompt, which is why your score sits comfortably in this range. You clearly state what the participants liked about the hotel, such as the 'clean and comfortable meeting room' and 'friendly staff'. You also explain why they were unhappy, pointing out that the food was cold and lacked variety. Furthermore, you suggest improvements like offering a 'wider variety of dishes'. To reach a higher band, your ideas would need more full development; for example, the suggestion regarding future improvements trails off slightly with a confusing point about having 'more guests', which is not fully relevant to food quality. However, your purpose is clear throughout and your tone is appropriately polite and formal for a business complaint letter.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
Your response demonstrates a clear logical organisation and progression throughout, reflecting a strong performance in this area. You begin with an appropriate formal greeting and an opening statement of purpose, move logically through the positive aspects and the complaints in separate paragraphs, and conclude with constructive suggestions and a courteous sign-off. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately to group related ideas together. Cohesive devices such as 'First of all', 'However', and 'I would therefore suggest' guide the reader smoothly through your thoughts without feeling mechanical. To achieve an even higher score, you could ensure that referencing between sentences is entirely seamless, avoiding slight jumps in thought such as the transition into the final paragraph of recommendations.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of vocabulary for this task, successfully attempting less common phrasing such as 'peaceful atmosphere', 'participants were disappointed', and 'meet their expectations'. Your word choices are generally clear enough to communicate your meaning without strain. However, there are a few spelling and word choice errors that prevent you from reaching a higher band. For instance, you misspelled 'writting' instead of writing, and 'recentaly' instead of recently. Additionally, phrases like 'did not fresh taste' contain word order and collocation errors. To improve your lexical score, focus on accurate spelling, natural word order, and expanding your use of precise collocation when describing food and service quality.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
Your writing shows a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating a reasonable control of grammar and punctuation. You successfully manage multi-clause sentences, such as 'As the meeting lasted the entire day, the participants expected a good quality and satisfying meal.' There are some errors in grammar and punctuation present in the text, but they rarely impede communication. For example, there are spacing issues around commas and periods (such as 'First of all ,I would'), and a structural error in 'and the some dishes did not fresh taste', where the article 'the' is unnecessary. To move to the next band, you should aim for a higher proportion of error-free complex sentences and ensure meticulous attention to article usage and punctuation spacing.
