Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to give you a feedback about our previous visit at your hotel Marriot.

As I organized an all- day meeting for my company last week. All the participants of my team loved the ambience and aroma of the hotel. All services were amazing including the welcome guesture, quality of the auditorium arrangements, and the equipments like sound and light was working perfectly.

Unfortunately, our participants and including myself were unhappy about the food that was served for lunch. Because, intially food was not served hot at the given time for lunch as well as food was very spicy which was not tolerated by many participant.

When I called your hotel for the very first time of arranging this event, I mentioned this that our team need mild spicy food. Please my request for the future tell your team to work on given the prior requirements.

yours fauthfully,

Gourav Saini

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You successfully cover all three bullet points required in the prompt. You state what participants liked about the hotel, explain the issues regarding the food, and suggest improvements for the future. However, some ideas are slightly under-developed, particularly the explanation of the food problems and your suggestions to the manager, which remain brief. Additionally, the response falls just short of the minimum length requirement, containing 146 words, meaning it misses the 150-word minimum by 4 words. To reach a higher level, you should extend your explanations with more specific detail and ensure you comfortably exceed the minimum word count.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

Your letter shows a coherent overall arrangement with a clear purpose and appropriate opening and closing formulas. Paragraphing is used to separate the introduction, positive points, complaints, and recommendations. However, the cohesion feels somewhat mechanical at times, and referencing is not always completely clear, such as starting a sentence with 'Because, intially food...' which disrupts the natural flow between ideas. To progress further, you need to use a wider range of cohesive devices more flexibly and ensure smoother transitions between sentences and paragraphs.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items such as 'ambience', 'auditorium', and 'requirements'. However, there are some noticeable word choice, spelling, and word form errors, such as writing 'feedback about our previous visit' (feedback is uncountable), 'guesture' (spelling), 'equipments' (uncountable plural), and 'fauthfully' in your sign-off. These errors do not impede communication, but they prevent you from achieving a higher band. To improve, focus on mastering word forms, spelling, and natural collocations.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

Your writing uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as 'As I organized an all-day meeting... all the participants loved...'. However, there are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation, including sentence fragments and awkward structures like 'the equipments like sound and light was working perfectly' (plural subject with singular verb) and 'Please my request for the future tell your team to work on given the prior requirements.' These frequent errors cause some difficulty for the reader and reflect a limited control of complex grammatical structures. To improve, you need to increase your accuracy with subject-verb agreement and complex clause structures.
