Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir/Madam,

I am writing to draw your attention toward a feedback from some individuals, who attended a meeting recently.

Last week, a meeting was oraganised by O7 services company at your venue and participants were impressed with the well-maintained architechture of the hotel. What they appreciated the most was the meeting room, which was spacious along with facilities such as projector and audio system.

However, several candidates have given a negative comment about the dinning area because they did not liked the food service offered by the hotel. They felt like staff was not only arrogant but also they were not serving fresh food. In spite of their complaint they were told that food is made of fresh vegetables.

It is really sad that a hotel of your repute can serve such horrid food. I would appreciate it if you could investigate this matter, so that others may not experience this.

I look forward to your prompt consideration.

Yours faithfully,

Manpreet Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You address the hotel’s positive features and explain the dissatisfaction with the lunch, so the letter is relevant and its purpose is apparent. The spacious meeting room and its projector and audio system are useful specifics. However, the final task point is not fully answered: asking the manager to “investigate this matter” does not explain what practical changes should be made to improve future meals. The complaint also focuses partly on staff attitude and freshness, while the participants’ specific reasons for disliking the food itself remain unclear. Develop this by identifying the food’s shortcomings and recommending actions such as checking food quality, offering menu choices, or training service staff. This would make the response address all parts more fully.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The letter has a clear overall arrangement: an opening purpose, positive comments, a paragraph introducing the complaint, and a closing request. The contrast signalled by “However” helps the reader follow the shift from praise to criticism, and the paragraphs each have a recognisable focus. Some connections are less smooth or precise, though. For example, “In spite of their complaint they were told…” does not clearly explain how this response relates to the food being served, and “this matter” in the final paragraph refers broadly to several complaints. Use clearer links and references, and organise the final paragraph around specific recommendations. This would make the progression more consistently logical rather than relying mainly on paragraph breaks and basic transitions.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range for a formal complaint, including “well-maintained,” “spacious,” “facilities,” “arrogant,” and “repute.” These choices communicate the main points, and the tone is generally appropriate. There are some spelling and word-choice or collocation inaccuracies, however, such as “architechture,” “dinning area,” “draw your attention toward a feedback,” and “horrid food.” “Candidates” is also less suitable than “participants” for people attending a company meeting. Aim for more natural, precise expressions, such as “bring some feedback to your attention,” “dining area,” and “poor-quality food.” Proofreading spelling and choosing conventional collocations would make the vocabulary more controlled and professional.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including the relative clause in “the meeting room, which was spacious” and the conditional request “I would appreciate it if you could investigate this matter.” Most sentences remain understandable, but some grammatical errors are present. For example, “they did not liked” should be “they did not like,” and “staff was” would be more naturally expressed as “the staff were” in this context. The opening phrase “a feedback” also has an article problem because “feedback” is uncountable. Review verb forms after “did,” agreement with collective nouns, and articles with uncountable nouns. Greater accuracy in these areas would strengthen an otherwise clear range of sentence structures.
