Dear Sir or Madam,

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing this letter to give feedback about the event, which was hosted by us on 20th May at your hotel.

To begin with, the majority of our guests appreciated the hotel architecture, ambience and the hospitality from the staff. Additionally, people were really amazed by the fact that hotel architecture was design in such a way that it creates the wind tunnel, which helps in lower the temperature in this scorching summer.

Although our clients and investors were impressed by above mentioned qualities about the hotel, there were major concerns about the food which was served during the event.

Firstly, the food was not warm and tasty as it should be. Secondly, there were not many vegetarian friendly options. At last, servents had not worne up the gloves while serving the food.

I would like to suggest that if there were any concerns about the dietary preferences it should be resolved by reaching out to the host, and the catering should be served at warm temperature whereever it is possible.

I look forward to host next event at your hotel.

Yours faithfully,

Jay

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The letter addresses all three required points and maintains an appropriate, polite purpose. You identify what guests valued—“the hotel architecture, ambience and the hospitality from the staff”—and give several specific reasons for dissatisfaction, including food temperature, limited vegetarian choices and serving hygiene. The recommendations about checking dietary preferences with the host and serving food warm are relevant. This meets the core task well, while showing some of the fuller development expected at the next level. However, the improvement advice is less complete than the complaint: explain how the hotel could ensure food stays warm and offer a wider range of vegetarian dishes. The unusual detail about a “wind tunnel” is also not clearly connected to the guests’ positive feedback, so clarify its relevance or focus on more directly observable features.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter has a clear overall progression: purpose, positive feedback, complaints, suggestions and a courteous closing. Paragraphing separates these functions effectively, and signposts such as “Additionally,” “Firstly” and “Secondly” help the reader follow the points. The contrast introduced by “Although” is also appropriate. To make the organisation more flexible and natural, avoid relying on a list-like sequence of “Firstly,” “Secondly” and “At last”; the final complaint could be linked more smoothly to the preceding points. The recommendation paragraph would also benefit from clearer connections between each problem and its proposed solution. Overall, the structure is easy to follow, though some linking is mechanical and the reference in “above mentioned qualities” could be more precise.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for a formal complaint, including “appreciated,” “hospitality,” “dietary preferences” and “catering.” These choices communicate the main ideas, and the tone is generally suitable. There are also attempts at more specific language, such as “scorching summer.” However, some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward, including “hotel architecture was design,” “vegetarian friendly options,” and “served at warm temperature.” Spelling and word-form errors such as “servents,” “worne” and “whereever” also reduce precision. Aim for natural combinations such as “the hotel’s design,” “vegetarian options” and “served at an appropriate temperature,” and check spelling carefully. This would make the vocabulary more precise and consistently natural.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The response includes both straightforward sentences and more complex forms, for example the concession beginning “Although our clients and investors…” and the conditional recommendation beginning “if there were any concerns…”. Meaning remains clear throughout, and the letter’s basic sentence structure is generally controlled. Some grammatical errors persist, however. In “hotel architecture was design,” the passive needs the past participle “designed”; “helps in lower the temperature” needs a gerund or infinitive form; and “I look forward to host” should use “hosting.” The conditional recommendation also needs clearer agreement and structure: “dietary preferences” is plural, and the clause would be more accurate as “any concerns … should be addressed.” Continue practising passive forms, verb patterns after prepositions, and conditional sentence construction.
