IELTS Writing Task 1 question
You recently organised an all-day meeting for your company, which took place in a local hotel. In their feedback, participants at the meeting said that they liked the hotel, but they were unhappy about the food that was served for lunch.
Write a letter to the manager of the hotel. In your letter
- say what the participants liked about the hotel
- explain why they were unhappy about the food
- suggest what the manager should do to improve the food in future
You do NOT need to write any addresses.
Begin your letter as follows:
Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Mr. Mark,
I hope you are doing well. I am writing this letter to appreciate the services served at your hotel during my meeting yesterday. I would also like to bring an issue into your consideration which is that some people did not like the menu.
The individuals were delighted by the services provided at the hotel. The Wi-Fi quality was strong through out the business gathering, which made the meeting go smoothly as two of the speakers were online. Moreover, the staff at the inn was extremely cooperative and polite, though a few members were late for the meeting but both the vallet and the staff handled the situation calmly. The members were given extra protocol and were directly taken to the hall where the meeting was going on, via lift, rather than using the escalator, this gesture of kindness was liked by the commitee.
Moving on, the food on the menu only had Pakistani and Chinese cuisine while there were 4 Italian people aswell. In addition to this, there was no vegetarian dish as a few people were vegetarians. Plus the food that served was cold.
Kindly look into this matter and re-check the menu before the next meeting and if possible verify the number of people who like a different cuisines so that it becomes convenient for everyone.
Yours faithfully,
Kisa.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You address all three points: you praise the hotel’s Wi-Fi and staff, explain that the menu lacked Italian and vegetarian options and that the food was cold, and ask the manager to review the menu and check guests’ preferences. These details make the complaint relevant and clear. The praise is more fully developed than the proposed improvements, however: “re-check the menu” and “verify the number of people” are useful but general, and you could specify practical steps such as offering a vegetarian choice and keeping dishes warm. The opening also names “Mr. Mark” despite the task’s required “Dear Sir or Madam,” which makes the letter less aligned with the instructions. Overall, the main purpose is clear, but some ideas need fuller development.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter has a clear overall shape: an opening, a paragraph describing what participants liked, an explanation of the food problem, and a closing request. Transitions such as “Moreover,” “Moving on,” and “In addition to this” help signal the progression. Some connections are less smooth, though. The sentence beginning “though a few members were late” shifts from praising the hotel to describing an incident, and the long sentence about being taken to the hall combines several details in a way that is difficult to follow. The final paragraph also joins two requests in one sentence. Use clearer sentence boundaries and keep each paragraph focused on one purpose to make the progression more consistently easy to follow.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use a reasonable range of vocabulary for a formal complaint, including “cooperative,” “vegetarian,” “cuisine,” and “convenient.” These choices communicate the main points, and the reader can understand the concerns. However, some expressions are inaccurate or unnatural for this context: “services served,” “extra protocol,” and “different cuisines” do not convey your meaning precisely. There are also spelling and spacing slips, including “through out,” “vallet,” “commitee,” and “aswell.” Aim for natural collocations and check spelling carefully; for example, describe the hotel’s “services” or “facilities,” and say that guests were “escorted to the meeting room.” This would make the vocabulary more precise and consistently appropriate.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including a relative clause in “an issue … which is that” and a contrast clause beginning “though.” The message remains understandable, but some grammatical errors occur. For example, “the food that served was cold” needs a passive verb (“the food that was served”), and “there were 4 Italian people aswell” would be more natural as “there were four Italian participants as well.” The sentence beginning “The members were given extra protocol” also has a comma splice between two complete clauses. Review passive forms, articles and clause punctuation, and divide longer sentences where needed. More consistently accurate control of these structures would strengthen the letter.
