Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing this letter as feedback about my last visit to your hotel for a business meeting with my team.
Last week, I organised a whole day meeting for my staff at your prestigious hotel. I must mention that my team really liked the front staff of your hotel. Upon arrival, we were overwhelmed by the welcoming nature of your front staff. On top of that, cleaniness was absoultely one thing which my team really impressed with.
However, I and my team were disappointed with the food we were served during lunch in the break time. It was not only cold but also looked rotten. I believe something went wrong in the kitchen of your facility. Checking it regurlarly and double checking with kitchen staff about food quality would prevent happening similar incidents in the future.
I hope you would take my suggestions into consideration.
Yours faithfully,
Navneet Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The letter addresses all three required points and maintains an appropriate formal purpose. You identify what participants liked—“the welcoming nature” of the front staff and the hotel’s cleanliness—and explain their dissatisfaction by saying the lunch was cold and appeared spoiled. You also offer a relevant preventive measure: checking food regularly and consulting kitchen staff about quality. These details make the response complete and relevant. However, the positive feedback is more developed than the proposed improvements, which remain general; for example, you could recommend specific steps such as serving lunch promptly, improving food storage, or offering a wider choice. The complaint would also be more effective if you clearly requested a response or action from the manager.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The information is arranged in a clear sequence: the purpose of the letter, positive comments, the complaint and suggestion, then a polite closing. Paragraphing helps distinguish these functions, and transitions such as “However” and “On top of that” guide the reader through the points. The overall progression is easy to follow. Some connections are less smooth or precise, though. “On top of that” is slightly conversational for this formal letter, while “Checking it regularly and double checking…” does not clearly specify what “it” refers to. The suggestion also runs directly into the explanation of its benefit. To strengthen cohesion, use more formal linking expressions and make references explicit, for example, “Regular food-safety checks and consultation with kitchen staff would help prevent similar incidents.”
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use a suitable range of vocabulary for a formal complaint, including “prestigious,” “overwhelmed,” “disappointed,” and “take my suggestions into consideration.” These choices communicate the main points, and the reader can understand the complaint. However, several spelling errors—“cleaniness,” “absoultely,” and “regurlarly”—reduce accuracy. Some expressions are also awkward or imprecise: “front staff” is less natural than “front-desk staff,” and “looked rotten” is a strong, informal description where “appeared spoiled” would be more appropriate. “Whole day meeting” could be expressed more naturally as “all-day meeting.” Greater control of spelling, collocation, and formal phrasing would make the vocabulary more precise and fluent.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The letter includes both simple sentences and more developed structures, such as “It was not only cold but also looked rotten” and the suggestion beginning “Checking it regularly…”. Most meaning remains clear, and the paragraphs are formed into complete sentences. Some grammatical errors are present, however. In “my team really impressed with,” the passive form is needed: “my team was really impressed with.” “I and my team” is better expressed as “My team and I,” and “prevent happening similar incidents” needs a grammatical construction such as “prevent similar incidents from happening.” The phrase “during lunch in the break time” also has an awkward prepositional pattern. Review verb forms and sentence patterns, while continuing to use varied structures.
