IELTS Writing Task 1 question
You recently organised an all-day meeting for your company, which took place in a local hotel. In their feedback, participants at the meeting said that they liked the hotel, but they were unhappy about the food that was served for lunch.
Write a letter to the manager of the hotel. In your letter
- say what the participants liked about the hotel
- explain why they were unhappy about the food
- suggest what the manager should do to improve the food in future
You do NOT need to write any addresses.
Begin your letter as follows:
Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Manager,
I hope this letter finds you well. I extremely appreciate your support and assistance throughout our company's monthly meeting held on Monday evening. Our guests really liked the decoration, seating, and parking arrangements made by your team except the food arrangements.
Many of our VIP guests complained about the quality of the food served during lunch. Starters and salad tasted delicious. However, the veg curry and chicken curry was unnecessarily spicy, bread tasted stale and rice was overcooked . Moreover, drinks served were of cheap quality although I provided special list for drinks to be served.
As your hotel is one of well known hotels of the area. So customers expect high quality of customer service after paying hefty amount of money. I strongly suggest you to check the quality gf food by yourself before serving. In addition, please ask from the organizers in advance regarding specific dietary restrictions as these days many go the individuals are intolerant to strong spices and grains. I hope you will consider my suggestion.
Kind regards,
Pooja Mehra

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
You address all three points clearly: you identify the hotel features guests appreciated, explain specific lunch problems, and recommend checks and advance discussion of dietary needs. Details such as the stale bread, overcooked rice, and overly spicy curries make the complaint credible, while the suggestions are relevant to preventing a repeat. The purpose and your position remain clear throughout. To make the ideas more fully developed, explain briefly how the manager could act on the drinks list or improve food preparation—for example, confirming the requested drinks with the organiser and checking dishes before service. The opening also refers to a “monthly meeting” and “Monday evening,” although the task describes an all-day meeting; keeping these details consistent would strengthen the response.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter has a clear overall progression: appreciation and positive feedback come first, followed by the food complaints and then recommendations. Paragraphing helps distinguish these functions, and connectors such as “However” and “Moreover” guide the reader through the contrast and additional concerns. This gives the response a coherent arrangement. Some links are less smooth, particularly “As your hotel is one of well known hotels of the area. So customers expect…,” where the sentence break interrupts the relationship between the ideas. The transition from the complaint to the general expectation of service could also be more direct. For stronger cohesion, combine closely related clauses and use references such as “these issues” to connect the recommendations explicitly to the problems described.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of vocabulary for a formal complaint, including “VIP guests,” “dietary restrictions,” “intolerant,” and “quality of the food.” Specific descriptions such as “stale” and “overcooked” communicate the problems precisely. There are, however, some inaccurate or unnatural choices that limit flexibility and control: “I extremely appreciate” is not a natural collocation, “cheap quality” is unclear, and “hefty amount of money” is rather informal for this letter. The phrase “one of well known hotels” also needs more natural wording. Check spelling and typing carefully, as “gf” and “go the individuals” appear to be errors. More precise, consistently formal collocations would make the complaint sound more polished.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and more complex forms, including the contrast introduced by “However” and the recommendation beginning “I strongly suggest.” Most of the message remains understandable, but some grammatical errors occur. For example, “the veg curry and chicken curry was” has a plural subject with a singular verb, and “As your hotel is one of well known hotels of the area. So…” is an incomplete sentence followed by an awkwardly connected clause. Articles are also missing in “one of well known hotels,” while “please ask from the organizers” uses an incorrect grammatical pattern. Review subject–verb agreement, articles, and sentence boundaries, and combine the final two clauses into a complete sentence. These corrections would improve accuracy while preserving your range of structures.
