Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir,

I am writing to get your attention on the employees¨ feedback about the food they had been offered at the hotel during our business meeting which was organised by me.

They appreciated the hotel¨s ambience and its seating arrangements in their feedback as it was quite spacious and well-organised. Everyone felt comfortable while attending the meeting. Additonally, employees have given me the positive report about the technology we have used during presentations.

Unfortunately, there is one thing that was not liked by all theworkers is the food because they felt that it was not fresh and unpleasant. Moreover, the menu consisted mainly of junk and non-vegetarian items which were not suitable for health-conscious and vegetarian employees, respectively.

After taking all the concerns from my collegues, I would like to suggest you to have balanced and healthy food items in the next business meeting so that eveyone can enjoy and appreciate them.

Best Regards,

Gurpreet Mahi

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You address all three points clearly: you praise the hotel’s ambience, spacious seating and presentation technology, explain that the lunch seemed stale and was unsuitable for some dietary preferences, and recommend healthier, balanced options for a future meeting. The purpose and polite tone are clear throughout. The explanation of the food complaint is specific, especially the contrast between non-vegetarian choices and vegetarian employees. Your final suggestion, however, remains fairly general; naming practical changes such as offering fresh dishes, vegetarian choices and a range of lighter options would develop it more fully. Overall, the response covers the task and supports its main ideas, while the proposed improvement could be more concrete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter follows a clear progression: it introduces the reason for writing, describes what participants valued, explains their dissatisfaction, and ends with a recommendation. Separate paragraphs help the reader distinguish these points, and connectors such as “Additionally,” “Unfortunately” and “Moreover” make the relationships between ideas clear. The closing is also appropriate for a formal letter. To make the flow more polished, avoid relying on a sequence of explicit linking words and connect some ideas more naturally. For example, the positive comments about the hotel and its presentation technology could be grouped more smoothly, while the food concerns could lead directly into specific recommendations. Overall, the organisation is logical and easy to follow.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for a formal complaint, including “ambience,” “seating arrangements,” “health-conscious” and “balanced.” These choices help communicate the participants’ positive impressions and dietary concerns. Some word choices and collocations are less natural, however: “get your attention on” would be more idiomatic as “bring to your attention,” and “positive report” is not the usual phrase for feedback. There are also spelling errors, including “Additonally,” “collegues” and “eveyone,” as well as inconsistent apostrophe characters in “employees¨.” These do not prevent understanding, but careful proofreading and more natural collocations would make the letter more precise and fluent.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including a reason clause in “as it was quite spacious and well-organised” and a purpose clause in “so that everyone can enjoy and appreciate them.” Most sentences communicate the intended meaning, but some grammatical patterns need more control. For example, “I would like to suggest you to have” should be “I would like to suggest that you provide” or “I would like to recommend providing.” In “one thing that was not liked by all the workers is the food,” the tense and construction are awkward; “one thing the workers disliked was the food” is clearer. Review verb patterns and sentence construction, and use consistent punctuation in the salutation and sign-off.
