Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir/Madam,

I am writing this letter to express my disappointment regarding the services of your hotel.

I recently hosted a corporate meeting for my company's employees at your hotel. I am thrilled to let you know our employees enjoyed their stay . for instance, they gave excellent feedback back for the cleaning standards, mattresses were so comfortable, welcoming and supportive staff, decor of the hotel was unusual but impressive. However, the staff members were not impressed by the quality of food . They complained that breakfast was not freshly prepared and was served cold. Moreover, lunch was also served cold.

This was not expected and it's unfortunate that such a reputed hotel couldn't provide the quality service in terms of food. Our company's employees were not satisfied with the food.

I would appreciate it if, management pay extra attention towards the food standards. Restaurant is one of the pivotal domain of the hotel. I believe there is a need to hire experienced chefs and the supervisor should double check the qality of food. The concept of serving cold breakfast need to be discouraged. In my opinion, no one likes to eat cold food early in the morning. Also, restaurant should experiment with other cusines to attract more foot fall of the guest.

I hope that the hotel management will consider my feedback and concerns. And investigate urgent. I loook forward from improvements in the restaurant.

Best wishes,

komal

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address all three points and maintain a clear purpose: the participants liked the hotel’s cleanliness, comfortable mattresses, staff and decor; they disliked food served cold; and you recommend closer supervision and experienced chefs. These relevant details meet the task well. The explanation of the food complaint is clear, but the improvement suggestions are less fully developed: for example, “experiment with other cuisines” is not directly linked to the specific problem of cold food. The opening also says you are disappointed with the hotel’s “services,” which is broader than the feedback you later describe. To strengthen the letter further, focus the request on practical steps such as serving lunch promptly, checking food temperature, and reviewing the menu with guests’ needs in mind.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The letter has a recognisable structure, moving from its purpose to positive feedback, the food complaint, recommendations and a closing. Paragraphing helps separate these stages, and connectors such as “However,” “Moreover” and “Also” make relationships between points clear. At times, though, the progression becomes repetitive: the dissatisfaction with food is stated several times, and the final lines, “I hope…” and “And investigate urgent,” do not connect smoothly. Some linking is mechanical, while punctuation and spacing around full stops interrupt the flow. Grouping the positive comments into a concise sentence and presenting the recommendations in a clearer sequence would make the letter easier to follow.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range for a formal complaint, including “corporate meeting,” “cleaning standards,” “reputed hotel” and “pivotal.” These choices communicate the main points, and the reader can understand the feedback. However, some less common expressions are inaccurate or unnatural in context, such as “restaurant is one of the pivotal domain,” “foot fall of the guest” and “investigate urgent.” There are also spelling errors, including “qality,” “cusines” and “loook,” which reduce the polish of the letter. Aim for precise, natural collocations rather than elevated wording where it does not fit; for instance, “restaurant is an important part of the hotel experience” is clearer and more idiomatic.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex forms, including the conditional request “I would appreciate it if…” and the clause “I believe there is a need to…”. Meaning is generally clear, but some grammatical errors and punctuation problems remain. For example, “I would appreciate it if, management pay” has an unnecessary comma and an incorrect verb form; “Restaurant is one of the pivotal domain” has article and singular/plural agreement problems; and “the concept … need to be discouraged” does not agree in number. The closing fragment “And investigate urgent” is also incomplete. Check subject–verb agreement, articles and sentence boundaries, and revise each sentence to ensure it has a complete, correctly formed clause.
