Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear sir,

Hope you are doing well.Last week, I organised a meeting of my company in your hotel.I want to describe positive and negative feedback by my employees.

First of all, your staff was very cooperative .There was misunderstaing regarding the booking but one of your staff member named raman sharma tackled that situation in very polite way and provide us a solution. The infrastructure of building was very impression,We did our meeting in quite environment.

However, my emploees complained about you food and i also feel there was a issue with your food.We ordered chinese food with mild spic level but ourstaff serves us extra spicy food. Moreover,it is not only spicy but also half cooked which was very unexpected for me .This is because when i booked your hotel, there were 5 stars in food sector.

I recommend you to hire some experienced staff who have complete knowledge about cooking as well as serving .Additionally, you can take test of cooking when hire someone because nowadays many people mention Fake experience in their resume.

I hope you will pay attention towards my advice.

Your sincerely

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address all three points: you praise the staff and meeting environment, explain that the Chinese lunch was too spicy and partly undercooked, and recommend improving staff recruitment and testing cooking skills. These details make the complaint clear and relevant. The positive feedback is somewhat less fully developed: the building and “quite environment” are mentioned, but you could explain more specifically what participants liked, such as the room, facilities, or service. The proposed solution focuses mainly on hiring and testing staff; adding practical steps such as checking spice preferences, monitoring food quality, or offering menu choices would develop the final point further. The letter’s purpose and overall position are clear, with some ideas already supported by specific examples.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter has a clear progression from its purpose, to positive feedback, to the food complaint, and finally to recommendations. Paragraphing helps distinguish these stages, and signposts such as “First of all,” “However,” and “Additionally” guide the reader through the points. The account of the booking misunderstanding also gives a concrete example of helpful service. To make the organisation more polished, use transitions less mechanically and connect related details more smoothly. For instance, the sentence about the hotel’s five-star food rating could be linked directly to why the undercooked, overly spicy meal was disappointing. A more conventional opening and closing would also strengthen the letter’s overall flow and formality.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant vocabulary to describe the experience, including “cooperative,” “tackled that situation,” “half cooked,” and “experienced staff.” These choices communicate the main points, and the specific description of the meal helps make the complaint understandable. However, several spelling and word-choice errors reduce precision, such as “misunderstaing,” “emploees,” “spic level,” and “Fake experience.” Some combinations are also unnatural, including “in quite environment” and “in food sector.” Aim for accurate, natural collocations and consistent spelling, especially in a formal letter. A broader range of precise terms for the hotel’s facilities, food quality, and possible improvements would make the vocabulary more flexible and professional.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including the explanation beginning “This is because…” and the recommendation introduced by “Additionally.” The main message remains understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. For example, “one of your staff member … provide us a solution” has problems with number and verb form, while “when i booked your hotel” needs appropriate capitalisation and tense consistency. Articles and sentence boundaries also need attention in phrases such as “there was a issue” and in the run-on opening, “Hope you are doing well.Last week…”. Practise checking subject–verb agreement, articles, and punctuation, and vary sentence structures while keeping each sentence controlled.
