Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I hope you are doing great. I am writing in response to a positive feedback about booking your hotel for a busniess meeting that I arranged last week.

I had a pleasant experience of organising a meeting at your hotel. I particularly asked for the personal feedback from the participants about the venue. Most of the people were quite satisfited by the ambiance of the hotel and the professional services offered by the staff members. They agreed that the parking space was quite accessible as well.

However, most of them were not pleased with the refreshment that was served in the lunch. The food was served late and not up to the mark. The menu was vegetarian but most of the dishes served were non-vegetarian.

I would like to suggest that the management should double check the requirements before the event in order to avoid any inconvenience.

I would look forward to your reply regarding this matter and letting me know what arrangements would you make to avoid such situation in the future.

Kind regards,

Arzoo

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address all three points and maintain an appropriate, polite purpose: you praise the hotel, explain the lunch problems, and recommend checking requirements before future events. The positive feedback is supported with specific details, including the ambience, staff service, and accessible parking. The complaint also identifies lateness and a mismatch between the requested vegetarian menu and the dishes served. However, the proposed improvement is less fully developed than the other points: explain how the hotel could confirm dietary requirements, check the menu before service, or ensure lunch is served on time. The opening phrase “in response to a positive feedback” also makes your purpose slightly unclear, since the letter mainly reports dissatisfaction with the food.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter has a clear progression from its purpose, to positive comments, to the food complaint and a recommendation. Paragraphing helps distinguish these stages, and linking words such as “However” make the change in focus easy to follow. The closing is also appropriate for a formal letter. To make the organisation more polished, connect the recommendation more directly to both problems: the current suggestion about checking requirements addresses the vegetarian menu, but not the late service. The final sentence, “letting me know what arrangements would you make,” is also awkwardly constructed and slightly interrupts the otherwise clear closing. Overall, the reader can follow the message without difficulty, though some links and phrasing could be more precise.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range for the situation, including relevant terms such as “participants,” “venue,” “professional services,” and “accessible.” These choices help convey the feedback clearly, and the tone is generally suitable. There are, however, several inaccurate or unnatural expressions: “positive feedback” does not accurately introduce a complaint, “refreshment” is not the natural term for a meal, and “served in the lunch” is an awkward collocation. Spelling errors such as “busniess” and “satisfited” also reduce accuracy. Aim for more precise phrases such as “feedback on the event,” “lunch,” and “served at lunchtime,” and proofread spelling and word forms before submitting.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including “I particularly asked for the personal feedback from the participants about the venue” and the recommendation beginning “I would like to suggest that…”. Most of the message remains understandable, and the errors do not prevent the reader from following your points. Some grammatical patterns need more control, especially in the closing: “what arrangements would you make” should use statement word order after “letting me know” (“what arrangements you would make”). The phrase “I would look forward” is also better expressed as “I look forward” in this conventional closing. Review embedded questions and formal-letter expressions, while continuing to use varied sentence structures.
