Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear sir,
I would like to inform you about recent experience in your hotel where I arranged full day meeting with my oraganisation.
Firstly, my boss and co-workers are very happy by welcoming staff of your hotel and they felt aroma like their house. In addition, they have impressed by very clean rooms and washrooms with on time cleaning. Therefore, my boss would like to plan next meeting in your hotel soon.
Moreover, I would like to tell you some disappointment which was experienced by my team while taking lunch. Although food was very delicious, main course was uncooked and difficult to chew for all members. As a result, I would like to suggest you change you kitchen staff or give some training to develop cooking skill. However, except food overall service was excellent to recommend someone.
Lastly, I would be grateful if you take some steps regarding this problem.
Yours faithfully, Patel.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You address all three points in the task: you mention the welcoming staff and clean rooms, explain that the main course was undercooked and hard to chew, and recommend training or changing the kitchen staff. The purpose is clear and the tone is generally appropriate for a formal complaint. The food issue is specific, but the positive feedback and proposed improvements are less fully developed; for example, you could explain what made the staff welcoming or suggest practical steps such as checking cooking times and gathering dietary preferences. The statement that the food was “very delicious” also conflicts somewhat with the complaint about the main course, so clarify whether other dishes were enjoyable. More precise development would make the letter more complete.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter has a clear overall sequence: you introduce the meeting, describe what participants liked, explain the lunch problem, and close with a request for action. Paragraphing helps separate the positive feedback from the complaint, and connectors such as “Firstly,” “Moreover,” and “As a result” guide the reader. However, some linking is mechanical, and “However, except food overall service was excellent” is awkwardly connected and makes the relationship between ideas less clear. The opening and closing are recognisable as a formal letter, though the salutation and sign-off could be more consistently formal. Use fewer formulaic transitions and connect each point more naturally to improve the flow.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use enough vocabulary to communicate the main points, including “welcoming staff,” “uncooked,” “difficult to chew,” and “training.” There are also attempts at more descriptive language, such as “aroma like their house,” but this phrase is unclear and does not convey the intended positive impression naturally. Several noticeable word-choice, collocation, and spelling problems reduce precision: “happy by welcoming staff,” “impressed by very clean rooms,” “change you kitchen staff,” and “oraganisation.” These do not prevent the reader from understanding the complaint, but they make the letter less fluent and professional. Aim for familiar, accurate collocations rather than translating expressions directly, and proofread spelling and possessives.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including clauses introduced by “Although” and “if,” and the main message remains understandable. Some grammatical errors persist, particularly in verb forms, articles, and sentence construction. For example, “they have impressed by very clean rooms” needs a passive form such as “they were impressed by the very clean rooms,” while “I arranged full day meeting” needs an article before “full-day meeting.” In “change you kitchen staff,” the possessive form is required, and “except food overall service was excellent” needs clearer grammatical framing. These errors are noticeable but generally do not block communication. Review passive constructions, articles, and sentence boundaries to make your varied structures more accurate.
