IELTS Writing Task 1 question
You recently organised an all-day meeting for your company, which took place in a local hotel. In their feedback, participants at the meeting said that they liked the hotel, but they were unhappy about the food that was served for lunch.
Write a letter to the manager of the hotel. In your letter
- say what the participants liked about the hotel
- explain why they were unhappy about the food
- suggest what the manager should do to improve the food in future
You do NOT need to write any addresses.
Begin your letter as follows:
Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Bob,
I am writing this letter to provide the genuine feedback of our recent meeting that was organized at hotel hilton.
The participants of the meeting loved the ambiance of the hotel. Especially the royal theme reflected the creativity of your interior designer and it was well presented.I would like to appreciate your house keeping staff as well for being very kind and hospitable.
I would like to raise a serious concern about the quality and taste of food that was served. We received complaints from every participant. Most of the people didnot like the taste at all and the issue that was common was about the bad quality of the food.
Most of the dishes were too oily and some were even over cooked. Hotel Hilton really needs to rain here kitchen staff well and also add more good chefs to the kitche in order to get recurring customers.
I hope you will work on the feedback provided so that next time we get a better experience at Hotel Hilton.
Yours faithfully

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You address all three points: you praise the hotel’s “ambiance” and staff, explain that participants disliked the food’s taste and quality, and recommend training kitchen staff and hiring more chefs. These are relevant details and the purpose of the letter is clear. However, the praise is developed more fully than the proposed improvements, which remain quite general; for example, you could specify how the hotel might improve menu planning, cooking standards, or food quality checks. The complaint that “every participant” objected is also broad and would be more convincing with a brief example of the feedback received. The informal greeting “Dear Bob” does not match the task’s requested opening or the formal relationship with a hotel manager.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The letter has a clear overall arrangement: it opens with its purpose, then gives positive feedback, describes the food problem, and ends with a recommendation and closing. Paragraphing helps the reader follow these stages, and phrases such as “I would like to raise” signal a shift to the complaint. Some connections are less smooth, however. “Most of the people didnot like the taste at all and the issue that was common…” combines related points awkwardly, while “Most of the dishes…” could be linked more clearly to the complaints in the previous paragraph. The final recommendation would also benefit from a clearer transition and more specific development. Use punctuation and linking phrases consistently to make the progression feel less abrupt.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the purpose, including “ambiance,” “hospitable,” “quality,” and “over cooked,” and the reader can understand the main message. There are also attempts at more formal expressions, such as “provide the genuine feedback” and “raise a serious concern,” although some combinations are not natural or precise. “Genuine feedback” would be better expressed as “honest feedback,” and “rain here kitchen staff” appears to be an inaccurate word choice that obscures the intended recommendation. Spelling and word-form slips such as “kitche” and “didnot” also reduce accuracy. Aim for natural collocations and proofread carefully, especially in the recommendation paragraph.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You use a mix of simple and more developed sentence forms, and most of the message remains understandable. For example, “Most of the dishes were too oily and some were even over cooked” communicates the complaint clearly. Some grammatical and punctuation errors remain: “at hotel hilton” needs an article and appropriate capitalization, and “it was well presented.I” needs a space after the full stop. The sentence beginning “Most of the people didnot like…” is also awkwardly joined and would be clearer as two sentences. In “needs to rain here kitchen staff well,” the intended structure is difficult to follow. Review articles, sentence boundaries, and punctuation, and use a clear pattern such as “The hotel should train its kitchen staff more thoroughly.”
