Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to share feedback about our all-day company meeting organized at your hotel. Employees at the meeting said that they liked the hotel, but they were unhappy about the food.

Firstly, the employees liked facilities provides by hotel like good seating arrangements and appropriate temperature of the room. Moreover, the staff was also very friendly and helpful.

However, many participants complaint about the food that was served for lunch. They found that breads were little burnt and rice was also over-cooked. There was weird smell coming out from lasagna also. Most of them believed that the food was prepared in rush.

To improve the food in future, I would like to suggest to properly prepare the team about the items to make and properly inspect before it is served to the guests. I hope that you will consider this to provide your best service to the guests in future and we truly appreciate your hospitality during our stay.

Yours faithfuly,

Kush

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address all three points: you mention the seating, room temperature and helpful staff; explain that the bread was burnt, the rice overcooked and the lasagna smelled unusual; and recommend better preparation and inspection. These details make the complaint clear and relevant. However, the suggestions are less fully developed: “properly prepare the team” is vague, and you could specify staff training, food-quality checks or a tasting before service. The response also contains 143 words, so it is 7 words below the 150-word minimum; the 24 words copied from the task prompt are not counted. Add a little more detail about the problems and practical improvements to complete the task more fully and professionally.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The letter has a clear overall arrangement: an opening purpose, a paragraph about what guests liked, a paragraph describing the food problems, and a closing recommendation. Sequencing words such as “Firstly,” “Moreover,” and “However” help readers follow the shift from praise to complaint. The progression is generally coherent, though the linking can feel mechanical, and the final paragraph combines the recommendation, a hope for future service and thanks in one long sentence. Separate these functions and use clearer links between the proposed actions and the expected improvement. A more conventional closing paragraph would also make the letter’s organisation feel more controlled.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for a formal complaint, including “feedback,” “participants,” “over-cooked,” “inspect,” and “hospitality.” The specific food descriptions help communicate the problem. Some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward, however, such as “facilities provides by hotel,” “participants complaint,” “weird smell,” and “prepare the team about the items to make.” “Yours faithfuly” also contains a spelling error and is not the usual formal sign-off. These choices do not prevent understanding, but they reduce precision and naturalness. Aim for standard complaint-letter phrasing, such as “the food was poorly prepared” and “train the kitchen staff,” and check spelling before submitting.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You use both simple sentences and some more developed structures, including “I am writing to share feedback…” and the sentence beginning “To improve the food in future…”. The main message remains understandable, but some grammatical errors occur. For example, “facilities provides” has incorrect agreement and verb form, while “many participants complaint” needs a past-tense verb. Articles and sentence construction also need attention in “There was weird smell coming out from lasagna,” and the final sentence joins several ideas without clear punctuation. Practise checking subject–verb agreement, past-tense forms and articles, and divide long sentences where needed. More accurate control of these patterns would make the letter easier to read.
