Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing this letter to give you feedback regarding a recent event held at your hotel on behalf of our company. The event took place on Thursday 22nd October and was an all-day meeting with our overseas employees.

Some aspects I would specially like to praise about were the ambiance of the hoteland hospitality of your staff. All participants praised how signs were displayed at small distances and presence of your hotel staff made it all the more convenient. No guest felt unattented to.

However there were some issues reported about food served that day. Some ofour guests complained that the bread served during lunch was stale and soup had a fishy odor as well. Overall it was a pleasant experience for everyone but I would like to suggest that you hire a food quality control manager who overlooks the process of making and serving food. By doing this your hotel will add to its comfort and hospitality.

We look forward to hosting more events at your hotel

Kind Regards

MK

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The letter addresses all three points clearly and maintains an appropriate purpose and tone. You identify what participants appreciated—“the ambiance of the hotel” and the staff’s hospitality—and give specific reasons for dissatisfaction, including stale bread and soup with a fishy odour. You also offer a relevant recommendation: appointing a food quality-control manager to oversee preparation and service. These details make the feedback useful and support your main points. To develop the ideas more fully, explain briefly how the hotel could respond to the particular complaints—for example, checking food freshness and gathering dietary preferences before future events. The recommendation is clear, though its practical details could be more specific.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter follows a clear, logical progression: you introduce the event, describe positive feedback, raise the food complaints, and suggest an improvement. Paragraphing helps distinguish these stages, while transitions such as “However” and “Overall” guide the reader through the change in focus. The opening and closing also suit a formal business letter. Some connections within sentences could be smoother: the move from the stale bread and soup complaints to the general recommendation is quite abrupt, and the final sentence would benefit from closing punctuation. You could improve flow by linking the proposed quality checks directly to the specific problems reported and by using a conventional sign-off format.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

Your vocabulary is adequate for the purpose and includes some suitably formal expressions, such as “feedback,” “participants,” “hospitality,” and “food quality control manager.” Specific descriptions like “stale” and “fishy odor” communicate the complaints clearly. However, some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward, including “specially like to praise,” “signs were displayed at small distances,” and “overlooks the process.” There are also spelling or spacing slips in “hoteland,” “ofour,” and “unattented.” These do not prevent understanding, but they limit precision and polish. Aim for more natural phrases such as “particularly appreciated,” “signs were clearly displayed,” and “supervises food preparation and service.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including the relative clause in “a food quality control manager who overlooks the process” and the contrast introduced by “However.” Most of the message remains understandable, and the event details are expressed clearly. Some grammatical and punctuation issues remain. In “Some aspects I would specially like to praise about were…,” the sentence structure is awkward; a clearer construction would be “The aspects I would particularly like to praise are…”. The sentence beginning “All participants praised how…” also has an unclear grammatical relationship between the praise and the details that follow. Add a full stop to the final sentence and use consistent punctuation in the closing. More careful editing would improve accuracy.
