Write a letter to the manager of the hotel. In your letter
- say what the participants liked about the hotel
- explain why they were unhappy about the food
- suggest what the manager should do to improve the food in future
You do NOT need to write any addresses.
Begin your letter as follows:
Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir,
I hope this letter finds you well. I am writing to give the feedback of the participants of an all-day meeting, which took place in your hotel.
The members of the meeting like the restaurant because it was located in a hilly area alongside the river with a gentle breeze of blowing wind which was astonishing. The staff of the hotel was also very cooperative and the prices were also affordable.
I would like to mention that the members were unhappy about the food served. The number of food items served were very few and some dishes were looking too old. Similarly, taste of the food was also not delicious.
I would like to suggest that hygiene of the food should be properly maintained and different new dishes should be added to the menu. Additionally, a trained person should be hired to make tasty food items.
I am looking forward to making these few changes for the future improvement of the hotel.
Yours truly,
Asad

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The letter addresses all three required points: it describes the hotel’s riverside setting and cooperative staff, explains dissatisfaction with the limited selection and food quality, and recommends improving hygiene, expanding the menu, and hiring a trained cook. These details make the purpose clear and the suggestions relevant. The explanation of the food complaint is somewhat general, however: “some dishes were looking too old” does not clarify whether they seemed stale, poorly presented, or otherwise unsuitable. The improvement proposals could also be linked more directly to the specific problems—for example, suggesting fresher preparation and a wider choice of lunch dishes. Developing those points with a little more precision would make the response more fully supported while retaining its clear focus and appropriate formal purpose.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The ideas follow a clear sequence: the opening establishes the reason for writing, the next paragraph describes what participants liked, and the following paragraphs explain the complaint and offer recommendations. This logical progression makes the letter easy to follow. Cohesive expressions such as “Similarly” and “Additionally” help connect related points, and the closing is appropriate. Some links are slightly mechanical, and the paragraph about the food moves quickly from the number of dishes to their appearance and taste without explaining how these points relate. The opening also has an extra space in “the feedback,” which affects presentation rather than organisation. To strengthen cohesion, use more precise links between each complaint and the corresponding recommendation, while keeping the clear paragraph structure.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The vocabulary is sufficient to communicate the main points, with relevant terms such as “participants,” “cooperative,” “affordable,” “hygiene,” and “menu.” However, several choices are imprecise or unnatural, which limits flexibility and precision. “A gentle breeze of blowing wind” is repetitive, “taste of the food was also not delicious” is awkward, and “a trained person” is less specific than the context requires. “Food items” is also repeated rather than varied. These choices do not prevent understanding, but they make parts of the letter sound less natural and less professionally phrased. Aim for accurate collocations and more specific vocabulary when describing the food and the proposed improvements.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The response uses a mix of simple and more developed sentence forms, including a relative clause in “an all-day meeting, which took place in your hotel” and a conditional-style recommendation with “should.” Most sentences communicate their meaning clearly, but some grammatical errors remain. In “The members of the meeting like the restaurant,” the past-tense context calls for “liked”; “The number of food items served were” has a subject–verb agreement error; and “taste of the food” needs an article or possessive determiner. The sentence beginning “I am looking forward to making” is also awkwardly formed for the intended meaning. Greater control of tense, agreement, and articles, alongside continued use of varied sentence structures, would improve accuracy.
